Biography

I, D.J. Dyess, came to Spur in the last week of March, 1926, as a barber. Went to work for W.P. (Bill) Simpson, worked for him four years, and have worked for several more barbers, including myself.

I married Marie Watson an old school day sweetheart in Van Zant County. We were married May 17, 1928, and shortly afterward established our home in Spur. On February 19, 1929, a daughter was born to us, and was tagged Autrey Nell, who is now Mrs. James Sharp and runs the Sharp´s Flowers.

By this time we were getting into a depression which most all you know about. Then on August 7, 1930, a son came along whose tag was Billy Wayne, and who, after high school and a hitch in the Army, married Wa Nell Moss in Dickens. They now have three sons and live in Lubbock, TX. He is employed by Hicks and Ragland engineering company. Autrey Nell took freshman and sophomore work at McMurry College at Abilene, Texas. Billy Wayne has no college work.

In May, on the 16th day 1936, another daughter came along, she was tagged Betty Sue, she is now Mrs. Fred Wyatt, and lives in Las Cruses, NM where he is employed by the U.S. Government in range management. They have a son and a daughter. Betty Sue took her B.S. degree at Eastern New Mexico University in Portles, NM.

On October 29, 1937, another son was born, he was tagged Robert Watson. He also took his degree at Eastern, he is married and has a son and daughter, he teaches and coaches at Southland, TX. Mrs. Dyess (Marie) worked several years at B. Schwartz Dry Goods Store and also Proctors Dry Goods. In 1951, she went into the catering business known as Dyess Tea Room.

I, D. J., am a barber what time I am not helping Marie. As to church affiliations we are Methoidst. I, D.J. have served as Chamber of commerce President. On the Chamber board, have served about ten years on the Spur Independent School district board of Trustees. Served one term on city Council of Spur, have been a Steward in the Methodist Church for many years. Served about a dozen years as Sunday School Superintendent. Have enjoyed forty years of life in Dickens County.
