Services Held for M.P. Duncan, 70, Long Time Resident
Funeral Services were held for Melvin Pierce Duncan, 70, at 2 p.m., Saturday, December 22, at the First Baptist Church with Rev. B.Z. Curtis officiating, assisted by R.D. Hill.A native of Collin county, Duncan had been a resident of Dickens County for 35 years, spending most of that time farming near Spur. Following his retirement from the business of farming, about ten years ago, he worked for the late W.M. Hazel in the feed business and until the time of his illness, worked at Bell and Fox Grocery.
Duncan had been bedfast for the past three months with leukemia, before his death early last Thursday morning.
Born July 23, 1881, Duncan was married to Cora Lee Hicks on April 16, 1903, at Denton, Texas. To this union were born seven girls and three boys.
Survivors include his wife, ten children, Mrs. M.O. Hill of Woodland, California, Mrs. W. V. Washington of Marysville, Calif., Mrs. D.G. Odam of Hereford, Mrs. Olney Walker of Spur, Thurmond Duncan of Salean Beach, Calif., H.D. Duncan of Clairemont, Frank Duncan of Marysville, Calif., Mrs. Byrl Lee Horton of Spur, Mrs. O.M. Williamson of Oliveshurst, Calif., and Mrs. Billie Joe Hodges of Spur.
Other surviving are two brothers, Frank of Farmington, N.M. and Bob of Linden, Texas; two sisters, Mrs. H.L. Foster and Mrs. P.H. Henderson, both of Linden, nineteen grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Melvin Adams, Kermit Cunningham, Harry Miller, Elmer Shugart, Clarence Watters, and H.W. Durham.
Serving as honorary pallbearers were J.A. Koon, Austin Bell, W.R. Gannon, O.P. Meadors, Bob Fox and Bob Westerman.
Burial was in the Spur cemetery under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
