Biography

I was born at Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas June 28, 1905 to Charles Claudius Cooper, 1857-1913, and Nancy Ann McMath Cooper, 1866-1951.

My older brother, John Clifford, my sister, Ruth, mother and I came to Dickens Couny in 1919. We lived on a farm just past Duck Creek. Our neighbors were the Boykins and the Twaddells.

Ruth and I attended Soldier Mound school 1919. In 1920 we came to Spur high school. Ruth married Wiley A. Stephens of Afton December 21, 1923. My mother accepted a job as Governess to Patty Hanks, daughter of Mr. Bernard Hanks of Abilene. My brother moved to Hale Center, but I remained in Spur with my Uncle John and continued my schooling until my Uncle John died February 13, 1923. I then joined my mother in Abilene and attended school there until I went to work for the J. M. Radford Wholesale Grocery chain in June, 1923.

My schoolmates at Soldier Mound were: Edmund Boykin, Jacob Paul Twaddell, "Doc" Station, W.C. Williams and his twin sisters, Lillian and Lucille. Our teacher was Lenora Wilkes, At the close of school, she married Otto W. Mott.

Some of my schoolmates at Spur were: Horace Hyatt, E.C. Edmonds, Jr., Jim Cloud, W.B. Lee, Jr., Henry Elkins, Rayburn Evans ... to name a few.

I was never happier in my life than when I lived in Spur. When I left there, brokenhearted, in 1923, I vowed to my friend, Herbert McCarty, who went to the train to see me leave on a cold, windy February day: "SOMEDAY I´LL BE BACK, NEVER TO LEAVE AGAIN". I meant it ? if you doubt it, take a look at the headstone erected and waiting for me since 1970. And the Campbell Funeral Home has all the details... WAITING! Let Bill wait... I´m in no hurry!
