Mathis White Chapman, born 20 May 1866 in Macon, Jones Co., GA, was the son of Henry Darby & Georgia Ann (Finney) Chapman. He came to Texas at the age of 9 with his parents. He lived in Lott, Falls County for several years before moving to Haskell County where he lived for 20 years. He moved to Dickens Co in 1919 owning and operating a farm two miles north of town. He served as cotton weigher at Rochester while a resident of Haskell County. He married Ida Mae Wadzeck on 9 July 1893 in Falls County, Texas. She was the daughter of Albert Lafate & Mary Lucretia (Marcy) Wadzeck. Ida Mae was born 25 January 1875 in Falls County, Texas. Mathis died on 21 March 1937 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. Ida Mae died 27 July 1953 in Pampa, Gray County, Texas. They are buried in the Spur Cemetery, Spur, Dickens County, Texas
Funeral Services Held For M.W. Chapman Yesterday Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 at the Church of Christ for M. W. Chapman, 70, pioneer West Texan, who died from a heart stroke Monday in a San Antonio hospital. Mr. Chapman had been ill for several months and was recently taken to San Antonio for treatment.Wright Randolph, former minister here and at this time minister of the Church of Christ at Clovis, N. M. conducted the services. Burial was in Spur cemetery in charge of Bill Kinney who had charge of the body after removal from the train at Sweetwater. Mr. Chapman was born at Macon Georgia May 20, 1866. He came to Texas at the age of nine. He lived for many years at Lott in Falls County before moving to Haskell County where he lived for 20 years. He moved to Dickens County in 1919, owning and operating a farm two miles north of town.
A farmer all his life Mr. Chapman had never aspired to public office, although serving many years as cotton weigher at Rochester while a resident of Haskell County. Survivors besides his wife are children: Willard Chapman of Oakland, Calif.; Mrs. Murl Moore of Sweetwater; Mrs Cleo Johnson of Crosbyton; Mrs Ida Ousley of Abiline; Egbert Chapman of Borger; Alton B. Chapman of Spur, Barron Chapman of Pampa; Joe Bailey Chapman of Oakland, Calif, Mathis White Chapman Jr. of Oakland, Calif, Sam T. Chapman , and Garland Chapman of Oakland Calif. Pallbearers were E. S. Lee, Paul Loe, Joe A. Moore{very hard to read this part, too dark} M. Foster and Jack Rector.
