Biography

John Walter Carlisle was born Sept. 6, 1878 in Talbert County, Georgia. He came to Texas at the age of fifteen in December, 1893, with his parents and settled in Navarro County.

He came to Dickens County in November, 1908, was engaged in farming. He was elected Public Cotton Weigher in 1910 and was elected for thirteen years.

In 1928 he was hired as the first manager of the Farmers´ Cooperative Gin in Spur for thirteen years.

He married Nellie Lee McClellan August 14, 1912 at Seymour, TX. She was the daughter of Rev. and Mrs. A. L. McClellan. He was a Presbyterian Minister. She was raised in Jack County.

Having no children of their own, they partly reared three motherless children, Lucille, Elzle and Monroe Tunnel. Lucille married Foy Vernon and lives in Spur. The boys both married girls in CA; Elzie lives in CA; while Monroe lives in Dublin, TX.

Mr. Walter, as he was known, died January 1st, 1968 at the age of 89. Miss Nellie, as of this date September, 1984 is 96 and living in Dublin, Texas. She left Spur in 1977 after falling and breaking her hip and came to Dublin where her son, Monroe Tunnell could look after her.

Mr. Walter was a Mason and an Oddfellow. Miss Nellie is an Eastern Star and Rebecca. Both were members of the Methodist Church.

Obituary

Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 2, for John Walter Carlisle, 89, a retired farmer. Rev. Clarence Stephens, pastor of the First Methodist Church officiated. Masonic rites were conducted at graveside.

Mr. Carlisle died Jan. 1 in Spur Memorial Hospital. He had been a resident of Dickens County since 1908. He was a member of the Methodist Church; Masonic Lodge; and Odd Fellows.

Survivors include his wife of Spur; foster children, Mrs. Lucille Vernon, Spur; Mr. Monroe Tunnell, Dublin; two brothers, W.S. Carlisle and J.B. Carlisle, both of Spur; two sisters, Mrs. Ila Beane, Ca; Mrs. Lucie Mae Walker, Winkler; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Pallbearers included Martin Pope, Horace Hyatt, Fred Arrington, Lawis Lee, Guy Karr, Jesse Morrison, Mutt Hagins, J.B. Morrison.

Interment was in Spur Cemetery.

Funeral services for Nellie Lee Carlisle, 97, were held December 24 at 2 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. George Price, Jr. officiating.

Mrs. Carlisle died December 22 at Dublin Nursing Center. She was born March 10, 1888 in Jack County. She married John Walter Carlisle on August 14, 1912 in Seymour. He died on January 1, 1968. A homemaker, she was a member of the Eastern Star, the Rebeccas and the Methodist Church. She lived in Dickens County from 1912 to 1977; she had lived the past eight years in Dublin.

Survivors include one son, Monroe Tunnell, Dublin; three grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. A daughter, Lucille Vernon, preceded her in death.

Burial was in Spur Memorial Cemetery with Campbell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
