Obituary

Granville Brown, 81, a citizen of Dickens County since 1909, died at 3:25 p.m. Friday, January 31, at his home one mile north of Spur. Mr. Brown had been confined to his home only a few days before his demise.

Funeral services were held from the Sur Methodist Church at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, February 2nd.

The Rev. H.L. Thurston, pastor of the Methodist Church, and R.L. Burnam, pioneer Baptist Minster, neighbor, and friend for many years of Mr. Brown, read the funeral rites and spoke words of condolence to the bereaved family and friends. Rev. Burnam gave an eulogy of his departed friend.

Pallbearers were: Clay Smart, Don Hairgrove, T.N. Morgan, Geo. S. Link Sr., John King, Sr., and Floyd Barnett.

Flower bearers were Mrs. Joe Collier, Mrs. Cecil Godfrey, Mrs. Floyd Barnett, Mrs. W.S. Campbell, Mrs. Leo S. Link, and Mrs. T.N. Morgan.

Interment was made in Spur Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Chapel.

Granville Brown was born at Jasper, Wayne County, Kentucky August 9, 1859, so of Andy and Carolyn Robinson Brown.

He was married to Miss Margaret Chapman on April 10, 1887 in Bell County, four miles west of Temple. To this union eight children were born, two of whom Alice Brown and Susie Brown Crush preceded their father in death.

Mr. Brown moved his family to Dickens County in 1909, established his home one mile north of Spur and became very active in the development of his country.

In August 1921 Mr. Brown was converted and joined the Spur Methodist Church where he held membership at the time of his death.

Surviving are his widow, Margaret Brown; three daughters, Mrs. Bess Shepherd, Spur; Mrs. Nell Goodwin, Long Beach, CA; and Mrs. Pauline McCormick, Mathis, TX; three sons, Mack Brown, Roseburg, OR; Ed Brown, Spur; and Boyd Brown, Artesia, NM. Three sisters, Mrs. J.P. Thurmon, of Contor, OK; Mrs. S.P. Henry, Floydada; and Mrs. Martin Moore of Belton; one brother, Henry Brown of CA and 5 grandchildren.

Two children, Mrs. Goodwin and Mack Brown and he brother, Henry Brown, were unable to attend the funeral; all others named were present

Other out of county relatives and friends here were two grandchildren, Frances and Erle Crush, their father, Ben Crush and wife of Garland. J.P. Thurman and son, James of Contors. Mrs. Jones and Mrs. Alma Lauderdale , nieces of Jayton; two nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Otis Brown of Crosbyton and Mr.andd Mrs. Ambrose Brown, of Stamford. Mr. and Mrs. Robert McCormick, of Robstown and Mrs. R.F. Armstrong and two children of Lubbock.

Funeral services were held from the Methodist church for Mrs. Brown, Tuesday, Jan. 27.

Rev. H.L. Thurston, pastor, where Mrs. Brown held membership, officiated, assisted by H.L. Burnam, a pioneer Baptist Minister, neighbor and close friend of the family. Rev. Burnam paid tribute to the beautiful Christian life of this pioneer mother, neighbor and friend.

Pallbearers were: V.C. Smart, Dee Hairgrove, T.N. Morgan, Geo. S. Link,Sr., John L. King, Sr., and Floyd Barnett.

Flower bearers were Mesdames Blanche Collier, Floyd Barnett, T.N. Morgan, Cecil Godfrey, Geo. S. Link, Sr., John L. King, Sr. and V.C. Smart.

Mrs. Brown was born March 2, 1869, Margaret Ann Chapman, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Chapman. At the age of 18 she was married April 10, 1887 to Granville Brown at the home of her parents 4 miles east of Temple, TX.

To this union were born 8 children, six of whom survive.

In December 1890 Mrs. Brown with her husband came West, locating at Anson in Jones Co. later moving to the Plains ad establishing a home in Floyd Co. at Floydada; from there they moved to Matador in 1900 and on January 10, 1910, less than 2 months after the opening of the town they came to Spur and established their present home.

Since the death of her companion, January 30, 1941. Mrs. Brown has been in declining health. Death occurred Tuesday morning at a.m. at her home, 1 mile north of Spur.

Campbell Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements. Interment was made in the family burial plot beside the graves of her companion and daughter, Alice. Another daughter, Susie Brown Crush, preceded her in death.

Surviving children include: Mrs. Bess Shepherd, Spur; Mrs. Nell Goodwin, Long Beach, CA; Mack Brown, Roseberg, OR; Ed Brown who lived in the home; Mrs. Pauline McCormick, Mathis, TX; and Boyd Brown, Artesia, NM. Three children, Mrs. Goodwin, Mack and Boyd Brown were unable to attend. All the others were present as were Earl and Frances Crush, grandchildren of Garland, TX.

Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. J.V. Burns of Graham and Mrs. G.W. Williamson, Mt. Top, Arkansas.
