Biography

We came to Dickens County from Haskell County in 1946 and settled in Spur: Mansell, Jerrine, Judy and Patsy. We were co-owners of a farm store which we named the Star Feed Store. Spur was a thriving little city boasting of the finest churches, schools, service clubs, and lodges. Being Baptists we affiliated with the First Baptist Church where I was ordained as a deacon and have been serving as church treasurer for several years.

Jerrine taught in the Prairie Chappel and Dry Lake schools before we were married in 1938 and after we came to Spur she taught in the Spur and McAdoo schools.

Judy and Patsy graduated from Spur High School with honors; they were privileged with having the finest teachers and instructors available. They were active in all church work and played the organ and piano for the worship services. They were also the "Sweetheart" for the Spur Rotary Club. Judy is now Mrs. Dave Fillpot. They have two children, a son Ray, who is a senior at Texas Tech and a daughter, Elise, who is a senior at the University of Illinois. Patsy is married to Dick Polansky; they live in Dallas.

I was voted into the Rotary Club and served as the secretary for 12 years. We had some very interesting and educational programs and a lot of entertainment where we got to know and appreciate our fellowman more. I am also active in the Spur Masonic Lodge and a Charter Member of the Scottish Rite Lodge of Lubbock, Texas.

We have been real happy living in Spur among some of the friendliest and best people on Earth. We love you all.

M.H. Bragg was in the retail Feed and Seed business, was born Nov. 12, to Mr. and Mrs. W.J. Bragg of Rochester, Texas. In O'Brien, Texas on July 8, he married Jerrine whose father, H.M. Cooner lived at Spur. Starting out to make money by selling papers, he found clerking in a hardware store more profitable. By the path of least resistance, he became intrested in the occupation of feed and also tried a tractor mechanic. The biggest lesson he learned from other men was to be honest and fair in business dealings. For relaxation he liked to watch television and read. He liked to hunt and fish. He belonged to the Baptist Church, Masonic Lodge, Sheriff's possee and Chamber of Commerce. He graduated from Rochester High School as Salutatorian and finished at N.T.A.C.
