Uncle Jack Barker Passed Away Monday
Jackson Oliver "Uncle Jack" Barker, 70, veteran jockey and horse trainer, died here Monday morning Feb. 17 at 4:15 a.m. following a heart attack.Mr. Barker was born in MO. February 24, 1871, spending his boyhood days in Missouri and Oklahoma. He lived a very colorful life, having been a jockey for many years, riding on some of the best tracks in America, and at one time going to Cuba to ride in a race.
After age barred him from the track and competitive races, Jack became a trainer of race horses, but never lost his desire to ride. Some two years ago Jack and a friend, taking their race horse along in a trailer, made a trip to New Mexico and Colorado, following the race circuit, and Jack riding at every track where the rule did not bar him. He won first money in one race.
Although "Uncle Jack" has been a resident of Spur only since 1937, he was known by practically everyone in this section, and has made many friends here who will learn of his passing with deep regret.
Funeral services were read by Rev. R.C. Brown, Interment was made in Spur Cemetery with Campbell Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Two brothers survive, John W. Barker, of Utah and Frank Barker of Colorado.
