Biography

Charlie Roy Arrington was born July 1, 1926 in the Red Hill Community in Dickens County, TX. His father and mother are Roy Arrington and Billie Shurgart Arrington. Charlie was named after his father Roy and his grandfather L.C. Arrington. Charlie, his brothers and sisters, Victor, Ida, Leo and Pat all attended Spur Schools. He liked to ride his horse around the farm and the Croton Breaks when he had the time. He always loved cattle and horses and when he was sixteen years old he left Dickens County and went to New Mexico and worked on various ranches including the Open Nine Ranch at Fort Sumner, the LE Ranch at Roswell and Double Steeple Ranch at Verimjo Park. In 1944 he went to work on the JA Ranch at Clarendon, TX and was drafted into the U.S. Army in December of 1944. He had a few days before he had to report so he helped Robert McAteer father his calves on the old Perrin place east of Dickens. On December 22, 1944 he reported to Fort Bliss in El Paso, TX. After basic training he was stationed on Luzon in the Philippine Islands and was there when World War II was over. After being discharged in late 1946, he returned to Dickens County but moved to Kent county to farm and ranch.

Charlie was visiting his parents in Spur and he and his cousin Dutch Hines were training their roping horses in the park (or showing off for the girls) and I was interested and he was interested so we got married June 1, 1950 and Charlie moved his seventeen year old city girl bride to the Salt Fork River in Kent County. In 1951 we bought a beautiful place on the Salt Fork of the Brazos which we still enjoy. We lived between the rivers with the rattlesnakes and varmits for 11 years. During this time besides doing his own farming and ranching Charlie day worked for Ross Renfro on the L7 Ranch in Crosbyton, the T Bar Ranch in Tahoka and the Cross L Ranch in Amarillo.

In 1962 we moved back to Spur and I went to work for Dickens County ASCS and have worked there for the past 23 years. In addition to his ranching operation Charlie works part time for Plains Cotton Growers and USDA-APHIS.
