Biography

Louis Earl Arnold was born in Italy, Texas to Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Franklin Arnold. He has a twin sister as well as six other brothers and sisters, two of whom deceased at early ages. He attended schools in Italy and Waco, Texas. Due to the depression and early death of his father, Louis, a brother and two sisters were placed in the Methodist Childrens Home of Waco for ten years. After working in Abilene for sometime, he joined the Air Force and was stationed in Lubbock.

After a year and a half of courtship, Louis married Norma Hoover at her parents home in Spur on July 22, 1944 by Mr. C.V. Allen. Norma was born and raised in Dickens County. Until the war ended they traveled from air base to air base, Norma transferring her work along with him.

After Louis´ discharge from the Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, they settled in Abilene where he was manager of a Piggly Wiggly grocery store for five years.

In April of 1951, Louis had the opportunity to buy "Hoover Finer Foods" from Norma´s brother Buddie. It then became known as Spur Super Market and was owned by Louis for 25 years. Twelve of these years were in partnership with a brother-in-law, John Dunaway.

During these years they were blessed with four children: Judy in 1946, Randy in 1951, Greg in 1958 and Kristi Jane in 1963. All attended Spur Schools from first grade through graduation. They gave them the joy of four grandchildren, but also sorrow in the loss of one grandson.

Norma was busy with Parent-Teachers Association, Study club, scouting and church activities. Louis also found time to be involved in the Chamber of Commerce, Spur Industrial Foundation, sponsoring Little League baseball teams and other civic affairs.

After Louis´ retirement in 1976, he purchased some farm land on which by strange coincidence the Stelle Hill School once stood. which brought back childhood memories of playing on the playground and standing in front of the big black stove on cold days and the picnics at Carlisle Springs.
