No greater love a man can have than this that he should lay down his life for his friend. Our martyred dead have made our nation consecrated and it falls upon us the living, to preserve it. Remembering our hallowed silent dead, the memory of them forever graven within us, we ponder this trust that they have laid upon us. It seems no other thought so amply fills the measure of their sacrifice, or plumbs so well the depth of love that has inspired heroic giving of themselves for us.

No greater love a man can have than this that he should lay down his life for his friend. To the heroic war dead of Dickens County, to those valiant souls who died that we might live, who held no quest of the past, whose glory lies in their faithfulness to duty, who did not envy those who were to live longer, whose selflessness is a challenge to all who would dare corrupt their valor with anything less than a just and lasting peace, we reverently and lovingly dedicate this memorial.
Williams-Puckett Unit, American Legion Auxiliary No. 161, Spur, Texas

Thanks to Mr. Robert "Bob" Porter who provided the book all this information was taken from. I am especially grateful in that he did not know me personally, but willingly loaned me his "only" copy in trust and support of what I am trying to accomplish so that others can share in this tribute.
