Biography

Rufus Irving Wallace was born February 20, 1890 at Thornton, Texas, Limestone County. Olar Belle Eldredge was born November 18, 1888 at Oakwood, Texas, Limestone County. They were married January 5, 1910. They were the parents of two daughters.

Laura Ann born October 4, 1910 in Freestone County, Texas. She married Lawrence Simmons Sr. They had two children, Lawrence Simmons, Jr. born February 15, 1929 and Bill Simmons born September 24, 1930. Laura Ann passed away March 1941 and Lawrence Jr. on July 28, 1957. Bill Simmons lives in Shallowater, Texas.

Dessie Mae Wallace born May 20, 1923, married Raymon Harris of McAdoo.

The Wallaces had four grandsons and seven great grandchildren.

Rufus died July 2, 1975 and Olar Belle on November 4, 1975. Both are buried at McAdoo Cemetery.

The Wallace and Eldredge families moved to McAdoo from Leon County in November 1910. The Wallaces moved to a farm one half mile west of the present town of McAdoo. Later they moved into McAdoo property where Rufus worked in the post office, operated a feed store, and drug store. He also worked for A.M. Lay and Mack Brantley at the McAdoo Mercantile. He returned to farming in 1950 and retired in 1956. The Wallaces enjoyed gardening and growing flowers. They celebrated their sixty-fifth wedding anniversary January 5, 1975 at the home of Raymon and Dessie Harris, Kirk and Kent. About twenty-five family members were present.

Obituary

A lengthy illness terminated in death Wed. afternoon of last week for Rufus Irving Wallace of McAdoo. Mr. Wallace, 85, died in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital.

He moved to McAdoo in November 1910.

Memorial rites were conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, July 4, in McAdoo First Baptist Church. The Rev. Luther Baker, pastor of McAdoo First United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Stanley May pastor of McAdoo Baptist Church, officiated.

Interment was made in McAdoo Cemetery, under direction of King Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

Mr. Wallace was a retired farmer and grocery store clerk.

A native of Limestone County, he and the former Olar Eldredge were married January 5, 1910 in Limestone County. They moved in November of that year to McAdoo.

The deceased was a member of First Baptist Church in McAdoo.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Harris of McAdoo; one brother, Charles E. Wallace of Lubbock; three grandsons; and seven great grandchildren.

A daughter and one grandson preceded Mr. Wallace in death.

Memorial services for Mrs. Olar Belle Wallace, a McAdoo resident for 65 years, will be conducted at 10 a.m. today (Thursday) in McAdoo Baptist Church. The Rev. Stanley May, pastor, and the Rev. Luther Baker, pastor of McAdoo Methodist Church are to officiate.

Burial will be made in McAdoo Cemetery beside the grave of her husband, Rufus Wallace, who died July 2 of this year. King Funeral Home is directing arrangements.

Mrs. Wallace was 86.

She was claimed by death Tuesday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital.

Survivors include: one daughter, Mrs. Raymond Harris of McAdoo; two brothers, Ben Eldredge and Willie Eldredge, both of McAdoo; three grandsons; and seven great grandchildren. Another daughter, Mrs. Laura Simmons, preceded her mother in death in 1941.

Born November 18, 1888, in Freestone, TX, the former Omar Belle Eldredge and Rufus Irving Wallace were married January 10, 1910, in Limestone County. They moved to McAdoo in November 1910.
