Biography

Walter Pullen was born March 23, 1892 in Brownwood, Texas. Fern McCarty was born February 14, 1897 in Afton, Texas. They were married January 9, 1916. Her father Wylie McCarty gave them eight acres as a wedding present. It was located a few miles east of McAdoo. It had a small house and that is where Walter brought his bride. Here their five children were born, educated in the McAdoo school, attended the Church of Christ, here they saw their children grow to be adults, saw them marry and their grandchildren coming back to the farm to visit, always enjoying their family and friends. Here Walter and Fern spent their last days Walter passed away on February 3, 1975 and Fern on September 27, 1979. Both are buried in the McAdoo cemetery.

Their children are Levis Pullen, married a Dickens County girl, Viola Pickens. They own and operate the Deluxe Beauty Shop in Spur, Texas.

Elzy married Dixie Roberts, they live in Midland where they are both employed by the county. They have three children, Linda, Larry, and Jerry.

Oris owns and lives on the Pullen home place. Olean (Huck) lives in McAdoo. He married Betty Beard and has two girls, Sally and Carol.

Dorothy married J.B. Pitts and has three children, Mike, Randy, and Debbie. Dorthy lives in Abilene, Texas where she is employed by the State of Texas.

Obituary

Walter L. Pullen, a McAdoo resident 59 years, was claimed by death at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital. He had been in failing health for some time.

Mr. Pullen was 82. He was born March 23, 1892. Memorial rites were conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the McAdoo Church of Christ by Leonard Dennis, minister of the church, and Rev. Stanley May, pastor of the McAdoo Baptist Church.

Interment was made in the McAdoo Cemetery, under direction of King Funeral Home.

A retired farmer, Walter L. Pullen was born in Brownwood. He and the former Lillian Fern McCarty were married January 9, 1916, in Dickens County. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Pitts of Abilene; four sons, Levis of Spur, Elzy of Midland, Oris and Olene, both of McAdoo; eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

McAdoo Community lost another of her longtime residents when Fern Pullen was claimed by death at 1 a.m. last Thursday in St. Mary's Hospital, Lubbock. She had experienced a lengthy illness.

Mrs. Pullen, 82, had been a McAdoo resident 63 years.

Memorial services were at 1 p.m. Saturday in the McAdoo Church of Christ with Allen Fowler, minister, and Leonard Dennis, former minister, officiating.

Interment was made in McAdoo Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home directed arrangements.

The former Fern McCarty was born in Hico. She was married to Walter Leak Pullen, Jan. 9, 1916 in Afton. Mr. Pullen preceded his wife in death Feb. 3, 1975.

Survivors include four sons, Lewis Pullen of Spur, Elzy Pullen of Midland, Oris Pullen and Olene (Huck) Pullen, both of McAdoo; a daughter, Dorothy Pitts of Abilene; a brother, Loran McCarty of Midland; two half-brothers, Billy McCarty of Odessa and Dwayne McCarty of Tennison; eight grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
