John Thomas Powers of Crosbyton, a former well known McAdoo community resident for over half a century, succumbed about 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, in Methodist Hospital, Lubbock, following a lengthy illness.
Mr. Powers was 89.
Memorial services were conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in the McAdoo United Methodist Church by the Rev. Lanny Wheeler, pastor, and Leonard Dennis, minister of the McAdoo Church of Christ.
Masonic graveside services were held prior to burial in McAdoo Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Born Jan. 17, 1887 in Central Texas, Powers and the former Emma Josephine Syler were married Dec. 25, 1910 in Stephenville. The couple would have observed their 66th wedding anniversary on Christmas Day.
Mrs. and Mrs. Powers moved to McAdoo in December 1915 from Central Texas. They resided in that community until moving to Crosbyton on March 18, 1972.
Powers retired from farming in 1966.
He was a member of Crosbyton Masonic Lodge #1020 and a former member of the Woodsman Lodge. He joined the McAdoo United Methodist Church in the mid 1930s and held membership in the church at the time of his death.
For several years Powers served as a member of the school board at McAdoo. He was an avid sports fan.
Survivors include his wife, Emma, of Crosbyton; one son, Coy Powers of McAdoo; one daughter, Mrs. Lorene Tedford of Crosbyton; one sister, Mrs. Lalla Duncan of Weatherford; seven grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren.

She was born in Stephenville. She married John Thomas Powers Dec. 25, 1910, in Stephenville. He died Dec. 18, 1976. She was a member of the McAdoo Methodist Church and lived in the McAdoo area for the last 69 years.
Survivors include a son, Coy of McAdoo; a daughter, Lorene Tedford of Crosbyton; a sister, Mable Russell of Stephenville; seven grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and two great great grandchildren.
