Biography

Charlie Harris and Willie Fay Gregory, both of Girard, Texas were married June 1, 1930 in Spur. They moved to McAdoo the following day, making their home there. Charlie was a farmer and except for a short time they have lived in McAdoo since 1930. They built a new home on the farm in 1941. All of their children attended school in McAdoo and all but one graduated there. Eight grandchildren graduated from there and three great great grandchildren are attending school there. All of the children have a special feeling for the school although some live far away. The Harris children are: Billy, who married Toni Wright (deceased 1973) they have three daughters, six grandchildren. Billy lives in Plano, Texas. H.F. (deceased 1984) married Lovey Grizzle, they have four sons, six grandchildren. Lovey still lives in McAdoo.

Varlene married Tommy Coffee. They have one daughter and three sons, six grandchildren. They live in Canada. Wanda Nell married Dickey Wooley (deceased 1977) they have three daughters, three grandchildren. Wandal Nell is now married to Paul Kirk and they live in Lubbock. Wilma married Richard Ward. They have three daughters, one grandchild. They live in Dougherty, Texas. Donald married Rita Van Meter. They have four sons and one grandchild. They live in McAdoo. Tommy married J.D. McCormick. They have two sons and live in Dickens. Charlie passed away in 1979. Fay still lives in the family home.

Obituary

Charlie Harris, a McAdoo resident the past half century, was claimed by death at 2:30 a.m. Saturday in Methodist Hospital, Lubbock. He had experienced a lengthy illness.

Memorial services for Mr. Harris, 71, were conducted at 3 p.m. Sunday in the McAdoo Baptist Church. The Rev. Carl Coffee, a Baptist pastor from Sara, Okla., officiated.

Interment was made in McAdoo Cemetery. Arrangements were directed by Adams Funeral Home.

Serving as pallbearers were Rance Gregory, Garth Gregory, Joe Gregory, Paul Owen, David Guidry, and David Jones.

Born August 19, 1907 in Cottonwood (Callahan County), Charlie Harris was married June 1, 1930, to the former Willie Fay Gregory in Spur. He moved to McAdoo in 1929 from Girard.

Mr. Harris was a member of the McAdoo Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Willie Fay; three sons, Billy Harris of Plano, H.F. Harris and Donald Harris, both of McAdoo; four daughters, Mrs. Verlene Coffey of Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, Mrs. Wanda Kirk of Lubbock, Mrs. Wilma Ward of Dougherty, and Mrs. Tommie McCormick of Dickens; one brother, Henry Harris of McAdoo; three grandchildren.

Services for Fay Harris, 87, of McAdoo were at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 20, 2001 at the McAdoo First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robby Harris officiating and the Rev. James Pope assisting.

Burial was in McAdoo Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

She died Saturday, February 17, 2001, at the Crosbyton Hospital.

She was born on May 14, 1913, in Swenson. She married Charlie Harris on June 1, 1930, in Spur. He died June 23, 1979.

She was a member of the McAdoo First Baptist Church. She moved to McAdoo in 1930 from Girard. She was a homemaker.

She is preceded in death by a son, H.F. Harris, on September 9, 1984.

Survivors include two sons, Billy Harris of Rusk and Donald Harris of McAdoo; four daughters, Verlene Monk of McAdoo, Wanda Kirk of Lubbock, Wilma Ward of Dougherty and Tommie McCormick of Hart; 23 grandchildren; 46 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.

Grandsons served as pallbearers.
