Biography

George and "Gertie" were married February 25, 1902 at Gorman, Texas. George had purchased eighty acres of land in Jones County, Texas in a little community called Stith. From the record book of deeds Anson, Texas Courthouse Book 22, page 57, November 16, 1900 George F. Harris bought eight acres from Will Stith. Eight dollars cash paid, blance due in five installments. George and Gertie's first four sons were born on this farm. In 1908 George bought one hundred sixty acres of farmland at McAdoo, Texas on the Caprock. The family continued to live at Stith until 1916. George sold the farm there and they moved to McAdoo. He purchased three hundred and sixty more acres joining their land and built a new house for his family. Here their fifth child was born. The little community of McAdoo consisted of one store and post office. George helped build the first church there and it was used by all. In 1923 George and Gertie lost their oldest son, Ray Allen Harris. In 1955 George retired. He had farmed for his entire life but now he leased his farm and he and Gertie moved to Abilene, Texas and bought a home at 1449 Orange St. In 1963 Gertie's health began to fail. Their oldest daughter Ina Mae went to live and care for her parents. Gertie died May 12, 1968 (Mother's Day). Ina and her father continued to live in Abilene until the death of George on February 19, 1971. Both are buried in the McAdoo Cemetery.
