Biography

Sam M. Brown son of John M. and Cora Howard Brown of Meadow, Texas was born November 17, 1916. Coy Hazel Moore daughter of William Isaac and Emily Lu Rigsby Moore of Garland County, Arkansas was born May 22, 1915. Hazel moved to the McAdoo Community with her parents in 1928. Sam and Hazel were married December 21, 1941 at the First Baptist Church parsonage at Levelland, Texas. They lived in Ropesville until Sam entered the service in October, 1942.

Hazel moved to Lubbock where she worked at the First National Bank until she could join Sam in California. After he returned from service they moved to McAdoo in 1943. Sam rented the Moore farm and Hazel taught school until 1945.

Sam and Hazel are the parents of two children, Sammy Coy, and Barbara Jane. Sammy began school McAdoo with Mrs. Loftin as his first grade teacher. He graduated from McAdoo and attended South Plains College at Levelland. Barbara attended her grade school years at McAdoo. Her first grade teacher was Mrs. Lane. She graduated from Crosbyton and attended Texas Tech University in Lubbock.

Sam and Hazel own and live on the Riley Wooten home place. Sam is a deacon in the First Baptist Church of McAdoo, has been Sunday School Superintendent, Bible teacher, has served on the school and gin boards and director of South Plains Telephone. Both Sam and Hazel are active in school and church activities.

Services for Hazel Brown, 88, of McAdoo were held at 11 a.m., Friday, Sept. 5, 2003 at the McAdoo First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robby Harris and the Rev. James Pope officiating.

Burial was in the McAdoo Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.

Mrs. Brown died Wednesday, Sept. 3, 2003 at Crosbyton Hospital. She was born on May 22, 1915 in Melbourne, AR. She married Sam Brown on Dec. 22, 1940 in Levelland.

She was a member of the McAdoo First Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school. She was a 1939 graduate of Texas Tech University and a member of Delta Kappa Gamma sorority, the Crosbyton Hospital Auxiliary, the Order of Eastern Star and the Harmony Club. She taught 6th grade and Homemaking in Crosbyton, Ropes, Patton Springs and McAdoo for a total of 48 years. She moved to McAdoo in 1925 from Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by a cousin, who was raised as a brother, W.H. Moore.

Survivors include her husband, Sam Brown of McAdoo; a son, Sam Brown of New Deal; a daughter, Janie Wheeless of Crosbyton; and a granddaughter, Trisha Wheeless of Lubbock.

Pallbearers were Larry Morris, Phil Morris, Lance Morris, Bill Tidwell, Donald Harris, and Richard Ward.

Honorary pallbearers were members of the McAdoo Volunteer Fire Department.

McADOO - Services for Sam M. Brown, 87, of McAdoo will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 25, at McAdoo First Baptist Church with the Rev. Robby Harris officiating. Burial will be in McAdoo Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton. Sam died Friday, July 23, 2004, at Crosbyton Hospital. He was born on Nov. 17, 1916, on Spade Ranch in Hockley County to John and Cora Howard Brown. On Dec. 22, 1940, he married Coy Hazel Moore in Levelland.

She preceded him in death on Sept. 3, 2003. Sam was a member and Deacon of McAdoo First Baptist Church. He was a 50-year-plus member of Crosbyton Masonic Lodge where he had served in every office except Secretary and had served as Past Master. He was a 32nd Degree Mason, a member of the York Rite, and a 50-year member of the Scottish Rite. He served as District Deputy of the 93rd Masonic District and was honored one year at the 93rd Masonic District Hill Top Meeting. He was a 50-year member of the Crosbyton Order of the Eastern Star where he served as Past Patron several times.

He was a longtime board member of South Plains Telephone Cooperative. He served on the McAdoo Gin Board many years, the McAdoo School Board, the Duck Creek Conservation Board, and the Plains Cooperative Oil Mill Board. Sam was very active in everything in McAdoo. He served in the Army Air Corps in the Military Police during WWII and was stationed in California. Survivors include a son, Sam of New Deal; a daughter, Janie Wheeless and husband Donnie of Crosbyton; and a granddaughter, Trisha Wheeless of Lubbock.
