Biography

James Jackson Barton was born August 14, 1866 in Hickory Flat Tippah co, Mississippi and died May 6, 1940.

Father: Benjamin Barton; born in Blount, Alabama August,1841. Benjamin died January 27,1917 in Little Rock, Arkansas. Benjamin died in a mental institution in Little Rock, Arkansas. He used to rub coal oil on his head and that was thought to have caused his mental problems

Mother: Martha Morgan. Martha was born in Tippah co, Mississippi 1844. Martha is buried in the Morgan plot in the cemetery in what is now called Coleman, Oklahoma.

James moved with his family to Polk county Arkansas when he was quite small. James Jackson married Mary Jane Stripling March 28, 1888. Mary became ill and the family moved west hoping her health would improve. James took his family to the Indian Territory with his Uncle John and Aunt Catherine in 1896. They lived in Indian Territory Oklahoma a few years and then moved to Texas. Mary´s health became worse and in 1906 she passed away. Mary was born in Cherry Hill, Arkansas. Mary died July 15,1906.

James Jackson Barton and Mary Jane Stripling had the following children:

1. Louester Barton, died 1971.
2. Mary Barton, died in Indian Territory at approximately 12 years of age.
3. Clara Pearl Barton was born 1889.
4. John Franklin Barton was born 1893.
5. Della Barton was born March 25, 1895.
6. Lula Myrtle Barton was born August 13, 1904.

In 1908 James married Edna Izella Morrison Holly, a widow with three small boys. Her husband had left her a farm at McAdoo so Edna and James moved on it in 1913. James Jackson passed away in 1940. Edna lived in McAdoo for several years.

Edna was born January 6,1874. Edna died July 31,1958 in Lubbock, Tx, at 84 years of age.

Edna and James had the following children:

1. Edna Beatrice Barton was born March 25, 1909 (Twin)
2. James (Pete) Beautrix Barton was born March 25, 1909 (Twin)
3. Joseph Joel Barton was born March 2, 1912
4. Norris Carl Barton was born February 11, 1916

Final rites for Mrs. J.J. Barton, 85, will be held at McAdoo Baptist Church today, Thursday at 3 p.m. with Elder O. Strickland, Graham, and Rev. Gene McCann, McAdoo, officiating.

Mrs. Barton died at 11:30 p.m. Wednesday night in a Lubbock convalescent home. She had been ill for five years.

Born January 6, 1873, in Mississippi, Mrs. Barton moved to Cottle County in 1890, then to McAdoo in 1913. She had been a member of the Primitive Baptist Church for 50 years.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Della Freeman, Brownfield, and Mrs. Bee Yarborough, Morton; five sons, Carl Barton, Aspermont, J.B. Barton, McAdoo, Jack Barton, Tulsa, Gus Morrison, Roaring Springs, Virgil Morrison, Amarillo, and 31 grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be John Allen, Willie Phifer, Lewis Hickman, O.T. Boucher, John Formby, Raymond Harris, Elois Nickels and Johnie Woolley.

Burial will be in McAdoo cemetery, King Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
