Biography

My dad and mother, Lute Porter and Pearl Lea were married in Knox City, Texas. They moved to Cloudcroft, New Mexico to homestead some land. In the five years they lived there, four children were born; Alyce, J. C., Mary and Tom. They returned to Texas in a covered wagon and settled in Knox County. Mama's daddy was a doctor there. Here Ruby, the fifth child was born. Shortly thereafter we moved to Croton in Dickens County to farm Sheriff Bob Collier's place. Here the sixth child, Virgie was born. Papa had a chance to buy some Matador Ranch land near Duncan Tank which was about a mile east of the Collier place. There Sam, Helen, and Bob were born, making nine children. Papa farmed the place until he developed an illness which was about 1940. He died Christmas day, 1950. Mama died in August, 1968.

Although times were real hard and we had our share of ups and downs as everybody did, no one had a happier life. Big families are nice that way.

by Mary Porter Nichols.
