Biography

John Ernest Noland was born August 22, 1896. Another son was born in Crowell; his name was James Madison (Jim) Noland, born February 18, 1899. John, Emma and their family moved back to the Midway Community in 1903 to what everyone referred to as the old rock house place. They farmed and raised horses for a living. John also helped in the building of the Dickens County courthouse. Ernest and Jim went to school at New Hope. Ernest went to high school in Matador, Texas. He worked for the Matador Ranch while he was going to school. After finishing high school, he went to West Texas Normal, known now as West Texas State University.

Eunice May Austin was born in Dickens City, Texas on March 8, 1900 to Early Austin and Gertrude Xeres Holly. Early and Gertrude had seven children: Steve Austin, Vena Austin Ragsdale, Otto Austin, Earl Austin, Pete Austin, and Clayton Austin. All of them were born in Dickens County except Steve and Vena, who were born in Eastland, Texas. Ernest and Eunice married December 22, 1916. They ran off to get married, planning to leave from a party at a neighbor's house. Fred Christopher picked Eunice up at home and took her to the party. (Fred Christopher later became sheriff of Dickens County). Ernest, Eunice, Will Overstreet and Abbie Glaydis left from the party to go to Clovis, NM> They got as far as the caprock and the Model T Ford they had borrowed broke down. Word was sent back to Dickens; so Ernest's dad, John Noland, took another car and took them on to Clovis. Ernest and Runice started their life together on the Henry Place in the Midway Community. Opal Geraldene was born three years later on December 18, 1919; Curtis Dell (Jiggs) Noland was born July 6, 1923 on the Noland place. Ernest moved his family to Seagraves, Texas in 1927. He rented a section of land southwest of Seagraves. Clayton Tolbert was born March 23, 1928. Because of no rain and the depression, the family moved back to Midway in 1929. Ernest got his teaching certificate and got his first teaching job in the Rhea Community 16 miles northwest of Friona, Texas. His next teaching job was at the Midway School. They lived in the teacherage just north of the schoolhouse, where Jewell Norrene was born on December 14, 1930. Ernest quit teaching and moved to the Dodson Place in 1933. John Early was born February 8, 1934.

Ernest and Eunice bought the Buchanan place five miles north of Dickens in 1935, and that is where the Nolands made their home for eighteen years. They moved to the farming community of Lazbuddie, 16 miles north of Muleshoe, Texas March 3, 1953. Ernest retired from farming and moved to Truth or Consequences, NM in 1962. They bought some apartments and devoted their time to running the apartments and the farm in Lazbuddie. Ernest passed away October 21, 1965. Eunice stayed on in Truth or Consequences until 1977, when she moved to Lubbock, Texas to be near her children. She passed away March 12, 1982.
