Biography

John James Noland was born May 5, 1855 in Illinois. He came to Texas with his parents, Nathan Young Noland and Sarah Emmaline Curry Noland in 1858. He had four sisters, Mary Jane Noland, Sedonia Noland Ketchem, Anmiza Noland Pittilo Gimble Wampler, and Clarissa.

Emma Elizabeth Dobbs was born March 30, 1865 in Parker County to George Dobbs and Mary Brown Dobbs. Emma had twenty brothers and sisters. John James Noland and Emma Elizabeth Dobbs married in 1889 in Parker County. They had two children before they moved to Dickens in 1895. Edna Noland was born December 5, 1891, and Nathan Noland was born in 1894. He died when he was nine months old. The Noland family came to Dickens County to homestead some land. They had homesteaded 160 acres two miles northwest of the Midway Community. Their first home was a half dugout. When Emma found out she was expecting another child, they moved to Crowell, Texas to stay with a sister and be near a doctor. The sister's name was Armiza Pitillo. While they were living in Crowell, John got a job hauling freight to the Navajo Indian Reservation in Chickasha, Oklahoma. John Ernest Noland was born August 22, 1896. Another son was born in Crowell; his name was James Madison (Jim) Noland, born February 18, 1899. John, Emma and their family moved back to the Midway Community in 1903 to what everyone referred to as the old rock house place. They farmed and raised horses for a living. John also helped in the building of the Dickens County courthouse. Ernest and Jim went to school at New Hope. Ernest went to high school in Matador, Texas. He worked for the Matador Ranch while he was going to school. After finishing high school, he went to West Texas Normal, known now as West Texas State University.

Ernest and Eunice May Dobbs married December 22, 1916. Ernest and Eunice started their life together on the Henry Place in the Midway Community. Opal Geraldene was born three years later on December 18, 1919; Curtis Dell (Jiggs) Noland was born July 6, 1923 on the Noland place. Ernest moved his family to Seagraves, Texas in 1927. He rented a section of land southwest of Seagraves. Clayton Tolbert was born March 23, 1928. Because of no rain and the depression, the family moved back to Midway in 1929. Ernest got his teaching certificate and got his first teaching job in the Rhea Community 16 miles northwest of Friona, Texas. His next teaching job was at the Midway School. They lived in the teacherage just north of the schoolhouse, where Jewell Norrene was born on December 14, 1930. Ernest quit teaching and moved to the Dodson Place in 1933. John Early was born February 8, 1934.

Ernest and Eunice bought the Buchanan place five miles north of Dickens in 1935, and that is where the Nolands made their home for eighteen years. They moved to the farming community of Lazbuddie, 16 miles north of Muleshoe, Texas March 3, 1953. Ernest retired from farming and moved to Truth or Consequences, NM in 1962. They bought some apartments and devoted their time to running the apartments and the farm in Lazbuddie. Ernest passed away October 21, 1965. Eunice stayed on in Truth or Consequences until 1977, when she moved to Lubbock, Texas to be near her children. She passed away March 12, 1982. Now - - - about Ernest and Eunice's children: Opal Geraldene Noland married Leonard Stephen Putman August 27, 1938, she lives in Lubbock, Texas. Leonard passed away February 18, 1985. They have two children, Doris Mae Putman Adams and Louis Ernest Putman. Doris lives in Lubbock and Louis lives in Seagraves, Texas. Curtis Dell (Jiggs) Noland married Rachel Clarine Martin June 9, 1952. They live in Lubbock, Texas and have two children, James Ernest Noland and Linda Dale Noland Moseley. Jimmy lives in New Deal, Texas and Linda lives in Lubbock. Clayton Tolbert Noland married Lota Pearl Hogan February 16, 1952. They have four children: Nicki Nan Noland Williams, John Tolbert Noland, Vicki Ann Noland Hargrove and Christi Dale Noland. Nicki and Vicki live in Lubbock, Johnny and Christi live in San Angelo, Texas. Jewell Norrene Harkey Holder married Jim Holder July 30, 1981. She has two sons, Jeffrey Dale Harkey and Dean Austin Harkey. Jeff lives in San Angelo, and Dean lives in Topsham, Maine.

John Early Noland married Dianna Delise July 6, 1961. They live in Friona, Texas. They have three children: Kenna Elizabeth Noland Smith, Jonna Renee Noland Bryant, and Clayton Curtis Noland. Kenna lives in Jacksboro, Texas, and Renee and C.C. live in Friona. Edna Noland married Joe Arthur in 1904. They had two children, Winnie Belle and Ernest Franklin Arthur. Winnie Belle was born December 5, 1906. She married Jonas Overstreet in 1923. They had two sons, Dalton Overstreet and Douglas Overstreet; both of them make their home in Scottsdale, Arizona. Ernest Franklin Arthur was born January 18, 1909. he married Grace Burnett September 10, 1928. They had four sons: Bobby Joe, Nathan, Terry, and Jerry, and one daughter, Wynema (Sis). Bobby Joe passed away March 15, 1985. Nathan lives in Hood River, Oregon. Terry lives in Seattle, Washington. Jerry lives in Palmer, Alaska, and Sis lives in Hansville, Washington. James Madison Noland married Zola Blakley March 16, 1919 in Dickens County. They had four daughters and one son: Ludell Noland Ethridge Fitz was born January 15, 1920, and makes her home in Mansfield, Texas. Ludell has two sons, James Ethridge of Lubbock, and Alvin Ethridge of Dallas. Billie Noland Collier Bridges was born August 1, 1923 and lives in Lubbock. She has two children, Donnie Collier of Houston, and Patsy Collier of Lubbock.

Wilma Lee Noland Brown Cole was born June 28, 1926, and lives in Lubbock. She has two children, Buster Brown of Houston, and Sue O'Bannon of Okay, Oklahoma. Nelva LaJuan Noland Adams was born January 9, 1935 and lives in Abilene, Texas. James Nathan Noland was born September 18, 1928. He died when he was nine months old. The roots of the Noland family will always in Dickens County. We will always remember our good times and hard times, our friends, neighbors, and loved ones.
