Obituary

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at the East Side Church of Christ, Dickens, for Richard Elzie Holly, 68.

Mr. Holly served for a number of years as mayor of Dickens and was a retired laundry operator. He died Sunday following an illness of about one year.

Dell Young, Spur, officiated.

Mr. Holly had lived in Dickens County all of his life. He was a member of the Church of Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Bessie Holly, Dickens; one son, Richard, Irvin; one daughter, Mrs. Don Edwards, Dickens; four brothers, Harvey Holly, Waco; Claude Holly, Seagraves; Roud Holly, Fort Worth; and Bernice Holly, Seagraves. One sister survives, she is Mrs. Roberta Cooper, Odessa; three grandchildren.

Pallbearers were J.J. Cumbie, T.L. Conaway, J.L. Koonsman, Fred Arrington, Buch Williams, and K.W. Street.

Interment was in Dickens Cemetery.

Bessie Marie Holly Thornberry, 95, of Springdale, Arkansas died September 12, 2003 at Springdale Health and Rehab Center at Springdale.

A memorial service was held at the home of Don and Marie Edwards Sunday, September 14th. Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 20th at the Dickens Cemetery at Dickens, Texas. Cremation was by Brashears Funeral Home at Huntsville.

She was born June 8, 1908 at Mena, Arkansas the daughter of Alfred and Catherine Willard Widener. She was a farmer and a member of the Westside Church of Christ at Springdale.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Elzie Holly to whom she was married on October 2, 1927 and who died on May 14, 1967 and Dave Thornberry to whom she was married on December 28, 1981 and who died on March 28, 1983; four brothers, Roy Widener, Floyd Widener, Clifford Widener and H.T. Widener; three sisters, Ollie Mae Banks, Vista Holly and Charlene Porter; one daughter-in-law, Novie Jene Holly.

Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Lloyd and Bonnie Holly of Gravette, Arkansas; one daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Don Edwards of Springdale, Arkansas; two stepsons, David Thornberry of Fayetteville, AK and Doug Thornberry of Pettigrew, AK; three stepdaughters, Janice Bunch and Francis Collins of Fayetteville, AK and Ann Adams; one brother and sister-in-law, Fred and Betty Widener of Lecanto, FL; 3 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

Mrs. Thornberry was a former resident of Dickens, TX.
