Lee was born May 4, 1929 in Coweta, Oklahoma to Charlie Clifford and Mary Mae Hix, and attended school in Sterling, Oklahoma. After working in the oil fields of New Mexico, Lee moved to Spur, Texas in 1948 and began working as a roughneck. While in Dickens, Lee cowboyed for local ranches until an accident made him unable to cowboy any longer. Lee loved to tell tales of "the good old days," reliving the days of team roping with friends and family in Kingfisher. Lee became a Christian and was baptized at Oak Street Baptist Church in Kingfisher; he loved the Lord, His church, and witnessing to others about what the Lord has done for him and his family.
