Biography

I was born at Afton, Texas, August 30, 1909. My parents were William P. Harvey and Daisy McCarty Harvey. They married in 1904 at Afton. They farmed the Zinn farm at Afton. The McCartys came to this county from Erath County in 1898. The Harveys came to Dickens County from Stonewall County in the early 1900´s. My grandfathers and grandmothers were Mr. and Mrs. Joe McCarty and Mr. and Mrs. Steven Harvey.

My wife is Helen Stephenson Harvey. Her parents were Mr. and Mrs. Vick Stephenson from Arkansas, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Benjamin Pollard and Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Charles Stephenson were her grandparents, also of Augusta, Arkansas. She came to this county in 1925 by train to Quanah, then to McAdoo on the mail car. We both attended school at McAdoo. I have farmed and done construction work in this county all my life. I met my wife at McAdoo School in 1925. We married January 14, 1928 at Dickens. We had 3 boys (deceased) and 2 girls; Libby Rich (Mrs. Troy Rich) and our other daughter is Virginia Havens (Mrs. Leon Havens) of Kalgary. We have five grandchildren. I joined McAdoo Baptist Church in 1933, and later moved to Afton Baptist Church. I was ordained as a Deacon in the Church in 1954. We later moved to Dickens and I have served in many capacities in my church. My wife was a member of the McAdoo Methodist Church in 1925. She later joined the Baptist Church and served the church in many ways. We moved from the farm at East Afton to Dickens in 1974 where we resided until 1985. I had a heart attack in 1982 which disabled me permanently. I sold my home in Dickens and moved to Crosbyton to be closer to my children and the doctor.

In 1938, I was working on the new highway going east of Dickens. I was drilling holes in a rock that had been cut for dynamite with a 90 pound air drill. Tom Hughes and I were drilling 28 foot holes in the cuts about 12 o´clock one night. We were drilling side by side with a 25 foot drill stem. We turned the air on to clean out the hole, and water came gushing out. The spring still is flowing at the roadside park just east of Dickens. We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary January 14, 1978. Our children and grandchildren hosted the celebration in our home in Dickens. It was a very special day for us. At this time we were the only ones in either of our families to reach their 50th anniversary. Many friends and relatives were there, all our children, grandchildren and great grandchildren were present.
