J.W. Edwards, Sr. was best known to friends and family as "Doc Edwards". He was the son of Joseph (1843-1911) and Martha (Hargus) Edwards of Eastland Co., TX and the husband of Mattie Alice Davidson whom he married Sept 25, 1898 in Dickens Co., TX. Doc was a rancher in Dickens County and lost his life when he was beset upon and murdered by a man with whom he had a disagreement.Doc and Mattie's children were: J.W. Jr., Gertie May, Claud Garland, Jettie Alice, Joseph Stanton, Henry Charlie, J.D., Clay Kitchen, and Horace Davidson Edwards.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 3:30 p.m. in the Dickens Baptist Church for Mrs. Mattie Edwards, 81. Rev. W.T. Harris, White Flat officiated.Born in Jack County in 1880, Mrs. Edwards first came to Dickens County in 1890. On September 25, 1898, she married J.W. Edwards, and they made their first home in the Croton community.
She joined the Baptist Church in 1918. She died at the Nichols Rest Home in Spur on Thursday, June 22, 1961. Survivors include five sons, Claude Edwards, Spur; Henry and Clay Edwards, both of Dickens; Joe Edwards, E´scalon, California and Horace Edwards, Galt, California. Two daughters are deceased. Other survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Donnie Kitchens, St. Vrain, NM and Mrs. Annie Hand, Dumont. Mrs. Edwards´ husband died in December 1917. Pallbearers included Alton White, Charlie Gage, Billie Hull, Lon Sharp, Sam Koonsman and Ern Scott. Interment was in Dickens Cemetery.
