Obituary

Funeral services for Hubert Shelmon Collins, 77, were held Sunday, July 14, 1996 at 2 p.m. in the Dickens Baptist Church, with Rev. C.L. Atkinson, Afton and Rev. Ken Porter, Gardener, Kansas officiating.

Mr. Collins was born in Weatherford on December 9, 1918 and had been a resident of Dickens County since 1983. Mr. Collins died at 10:04 a.m. Friday, July 12, 1996 in St. Mary Hospital, Lubbock. Burial was in Dickens Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home, Spur.

He was an employee of the Texas Highway Department for 41 years, retiring in 1980. He was a deacon at the Dickens Baptist Church and also taught Sunday school for many years. He married Thelma McKnight on May 29, 1938 in Dickens. One daughter, Cynthia Snook, preceded him in death on February 20, 1996.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma; one son, Jesse Collins, Idalou; two daughters, Sylvia Porter, Gardener, Kansas; and Nellie Whitehurst, Nacogdoches; two sisters, Minnie Mae Wyatt, Spur; Thelma Butler, Cloudcroft, New Mexico; 13 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.

Thelma CollinsThelma Lucille Collins, 85, of Lubbock and formerly of Dickens died Thursday March 1, 2007. Services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, March 4, 2007 at Dickens Baptist Church with Ken Porter and Rev. C.L. Atkinson officiating. Burial will be in Dickens Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home.

Thelma was born May 13, 1921 in Afton to Howard and Juddie McCarty McKnight. She married Hubert Collins May 29, 1938 in Dickens. He preceded her in death in 1996. She was a homemaker, a loving mom and a member of Dickens Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters, Sylvia Porter of Gardner, Kan. and Nellie Whitehurst of Zavalla, Texas; one son, Jessie Collins of Idalou; one brother, James Calton McKnight of Wilderado, Texas; one sister, Juddie Holly of Dickens; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

Thelma was also preceded in death by one daughter, two granddaughters, three brothers and one sister.

The family suggests memorials to Dickens Baptist Church, Box 66, Dickens, TX 79229 or North Dickens Senior Citizens Center, Box 163, Dickens, TX 79229.
