Biography

As an employee of Dickens County I feel as though I am a real resident since coming here January 2, 1898 as a child with my parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. J. E. (Uncle Dink) Arthur in a covered wagon from Eastland County, Texas to land file four and one-half miles north of Dickens. Was in the cellar my Dad dug here, and on the fireplace he built that my Mother baked a cake in the old dutch oven celebrating my third birthday on January 31, 1898. Too, it is this farm I still maintain.

The years have come and gone and I well remember my childhood life in the rough of pioneering mingled with the joys and happiness along the way. As an adult there was my barber shop business before being called to serve in World War I, spending most of my service in Germany and France in 1918 and 1919 as a hospital attendant.

September 8, 1921, Lessie Stephens and I were united in marriage at the home of her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Stephens. They were Dickens County residents since early nineteen hundred, and my wife was born and reared here.

We, being members of the Church of Christ have attended services through the years at Midway where I have been an Elder for years. Among our blessings were born four girls to our home.

Lona Dell married Virgil Rogers having their home in Lubbock where he is employed in the State Comptroller´s Office, and she as Assistant to the Dickens County School Superintendent.

Ermal and Thurman Hoover were married having four children, one daughter who is married, and three sons. Ermal is with the Lubbock Public School System and Mr. Hoover is associated with an Insurance Company in Lubbock.

Haunera, her husband, Truett Pritchett, their two daughters and three sons live in Amarillo where Mr. Pritchett is employed at Pantex as Skilled Mechanic.

Lynna, the youngest attended Texas Tech College and married Gabriel Garcia, a graduate of Texas Tech and working toward a Language Doctorate in the University of Tucson, Arizona and is also assistant manager of a Mayfair Food Store. They are the proud parents of five little girls.

Engaged in farming all of our married life my employment has been a two and three fold business since the Fall of 1947 when I assumed duties as custodian of the Dickens County Courthouse; and then making it the three fold affair in 1952 when becoming Justice of the Peace of Precinct Number One and holding this office until 1963. Now, the Fall of 1966, I am beginning the twentieth year as custodian of the Dickens County Courthouse along with the cattle farming business.
