Biography

Our family of eight children and our parents, with three covered wagons and a relative with five in the family and one covered wagon left Odell, Texas in Wilbarger County and headed for New Mexico to take out a claim on the Government land.

We camped out along the way setting up a tent each night in bad weather. We cooked on a small oil stove and on a camp fire.

When we reached Plainview, which was a week's journey it seemed at that time, we met up with two other families going our way. That made seven wagons in the train. We stayed together until we got into New Mexico, near Clovis, and they went their way. We went on into Stanley, a small tonw in the Estancie Valley, near Santa Fe.

We always camped at lakes or tanks, where there was water for our stock; we did our washing on the rubboard.

My father and the boys took out claims. One-half section to each person. There was no water on the land. We drilled dry holes to 400 to 600 feet. They finally gave up and we went on up in the Albuquerque Mountains and ran a saw mill. My father lost an arm. Then he decided to come back to Texas. At that time two of the boys had gone into the Services in World War I.

We came to Dickens County and lived on Mrs. Mattie Edwards place March, 1919. I married Jim Offield and have seven children. We live in the East Afton community and have been living there after the World War I.
