U.S.Flag   Graveside services for John A. Stokes, 91, of Afton, were held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 8, 2000, at the Afton Cemetery. Officiating was Rev. C.L. Atkinson, pastor of Afton Baptist Church. Interment was under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador.

Stokes died Friday, March 3, at a nursing home in Clyde, Texas.

He was born November 9, 1908, at Paducah. He moved to Dickens County in 1910 with his parents, Rev. and Mrs. A.P. Stokes, and had been a resident of the Afton Community since 1913.

He was married to the former Estelle Dawson June 30, 1935, in Spur. Mrs. Stokes died in July 1992. He was a retired farmer and carpenter, and school bus driver. He was a member of the Afton Baptist Church, the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star, and was a member of the Scottish Rite and York Rite Bodies.

He is survived by one son, Ronnie Stokes of Abilene; one daughter, Katherine Wilson of Fairfield; one brother, Rob Stokes of Weatherford; six grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
