Biography

John H. Stegall was born February 18, 1831 in TN and died April 14, 1906 in Afton, TX.

John H. was first married 8 Dec 1842 to Melvina C. Cooper born 9 Jun 1834.

Second marriage of John H. Stegall in 1857 to Mary Lucas ( Burke ) Browning (1820) Clark co. AR - (1903)Afton, TX. John was a farmer and a Methodist preacher.

Mary Lucas Burke Browning STEGALL was born in March 1820 in Clark County, Arkansas and reared in Alabama. Her father was William Burke, who died in Alabama around the year 1855 and her mother was Elizabeth B. Sanders. Mary married August 11, 1842 at the age of 22 years to William Frederick BROWNING born July 9, 1802 in Clarke County, GA. William died on July 26, 1854 in Amity, Clarke County, Arkansas at the age of 52 and is buried in Glenwood, Pike County, AR. Mary Lucas Burke and William Fredrick Browning had the following children:

  1. William E. Browning 1837 AL
  2. Joseph Alansing Browning 1842 AR married Jenetta Angelina McCarty
  3. John Robert Browning 1844 AR
  4. Georgia Ann Browning 1846 AR
  5. James Nathan Browning 1849 AR (was LT. Gov of TX from 1898 to 1903. )
  6. Washington Browning 1858 AR
  7. Nancy P. Browning 1844 AR ( is on 1880 Census Young Co., TX with John H. & Mary Stegall Nancy P. Browning [stepdaughter] 25 AR TN GA)
(Note: These children at times are listed as Stegall children on census.)

In 1857 Mary Burke Browning married John H STEGALL at the age of 37 years old. John H. was a farmer and Methodist Preacher.

John H. Stegall and Mary Lucas had two children:

  1. Martha A. Stegall --- died in infancy
  2. William Wood Stegall 5 Jan 1862 AR Clark Co., Amity- died 19 May 1943 TX Littlefield. Buried in Whiteface, Texas. Married Leonora Ann Parrish married 1 Sept 1886 and had 14 children.

The year 1860 has Mary Burke Browning residing in Colbath, Clark County, Arkansas. In 1866, Mrs. Browning (now Stegall moved to Cooke county, Texas, with her family, and during the following year to Shackelford county. Their residence in 1880 is Young County, Texas and in 1900, Dickens County, Texas.

Mary Burke Browing Stegall died February 6, 1903 in Afton, Texas, having lived a long life of 83 years; buried in Afton Cemetery, Dickens County, Texas.

Military information on Mary Burkes son John Robert Browning Stegall 1844 AR. Step son of John H. Stegall . 10 Arkansas Co. Calvery Co. C. Enlisted July 7, 1863 Lewisville, Arkansas.

Dickens, Tex., Feb. 6 � Died in Dickens County, Tex on Feb. 5, J. H. Stegall, 87 years of age. Mr. Stegall had lived in this county for many years.
