Biography

The McCarty family came to Dickens in 1898, and settled in the Afton community. They came from Erath County in covered wagons we brought a herd of cattle with us. There were eleven children, Henry, Lewis, Willis, Huey, Alvin and Wylie, Gypsy, Daisy, Annie and Rosa. We all had good times together. All the boys could play musical instruments, many times we would put the organ in the wagon, and go seranading our neighbors. Lewis played the guitar, Henry the violin, Huey the Mandolin, Wylie the organ and the rest of us would sing. Our houses were dug-outs.

We had to buy our supplies from Quanah. Several neighbors would go together and form a wagon train. All would camp and cook together. Sometimes it would take ten days or more to make the round trip, depending on the weather and how much rain we had. We would buy sugar by the barrels and several hundred pounds of flour. We had to get enough supplies to last a long time.

My daddy said that he was going out to West Texas where his children would not have to pick cotton. He planted cotton the next year. No cotton had ever been planted, sopeople came from miles around to see it. We kids picked it and it was hauled to Paducah to be ginner. From then on, we kids picked cotton.

The first school we went to was Lower Cottonwood, but it was named Prairie Chapel by Mrs. F.B. Whitaker, the first teacher in 1893. Our teacher was named Mrs. Nellie Harris. Our first church was a Upper Cottonwood. Mr. W.G. Bolenger was our pastor. Later we built a church at Gravel Hill; it was the Primitive Baptist Church and the first ordained pastor was Bro. Lewis. We had "old time revivals" and people came from many states and camped and stayed for weeks. What a glorious time we would have. People got so happy that they shouted.

We used coal oil lanters and lamps and cooked on wood stoves and fireplaces, washed on rub boards and hung our clothes on barbed wire fences and mesquite trees. Our clothes looked so pretty and white hanging on the trees. We all had more time to visit the sick and our neighbors than we do now.

Some of which neighbors were the Joe Jackson, Whitakers, Arringtons, Harveys, Staks, Hales, Zinna, Borbis, Allens, Staffords, and many more.

My mother was a mid wife, and she brought many children into this world. Most of the time the neighbors would come for her and she would stay all night and longer if needed.
