Funeral rites for an area pioneer, Mrs. S. J. Hickman, 77, were held at 10:30 a.m. Monday in the Crosbyton Church of Christ. Mrs. Hickman died about 11 a.m. Saturday in a Crosbyton hospital after a brief illness.

Bill Bryant, minister of Parkway Drive Church of Christ, Lubbock, the Rev. Donald Hancock of Plainview, and Roger Turner, minister of Crosbyton Church of Christ, officiated.

Burial was in the Afton Cemetery under direction of King Funeral Home.

Mrs. Hickman was born in Oklahoma and moved to Dickens County in 1915. She was married to S.J. Hickman Aug. 9, 1916. They moved to Crosbyton in 1950.

She is survived by her husband; three sons, J. P. of Sweetwater, Tommy of Hereford and Bill of San Antonio; five daughters, Mrs. Will Griffin of McAdoo, Mrs. Earl Wiseley of Tulsa, Mrs. Bill Wilkinson of San Angelo, Mrs. Wayne Dobson of Fort Stockton and Mrs. Arthur Griffin of Crosbyton; three brothers, Charles Scott of Afton, Earn Scott of Dickens and Roy Scott of Modesto, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. Hallet Holly of Dickens; 26 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Silas Jackson Hickman, a longtime resident of this area, was claimed by death about 11:30 a.m. Sunday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital at age 81.

Mr. Hickman resided on Route One, McAdoo, on the East Plains.

Memorial services were held at 2 p.m. Monday in the Church of Christ in Crosbyton by Joseph Johnston and Lloyd Hall, local ministers.

Interment was made in Afton Cemetery beside the grave of his late wife, who preceded him in death Dec. 11, 1971. King Funeral Home directed arrangements.

A retired farmer, Mr. Hickman moved to Dickens in 1915 and to Crosbyton in 1950.

Born Feb. 8, 1893, in McKinzie, Tenn., he and the former Jenny Clementine Scott were married Aug. 9, 1916, in Afton.

He is survived by three sons, J.P. Hickman of Amarillo, Tommy Hickman of Hereford and Bill Hickman of San Antonio; five daughters, Mrs. Will D. Griffin of McAdoo, Mrs. Wiseley of Goldsboro, Okla., Mrs. Bill Wilkinson of Menard, Mrs. Wayne Dobson of Fort Stockton and Mrs. Arthur Griffin of Crosbyton; two brothers, M.P. Hickman of Spur and Joe Bailey Hickman of Dickens; one sister, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Groff of Fort Supply, Okla.; 27 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.
