Biography

Ralph Bennett was born in Jayton, Texas in 1911, the only child of G.W. and Lona Bennett. He attended school in Jayton, Roaring Springs, and Whiteflat where his father was a teacher. Receiving a scholarship in track and football, he attended John Tarleton in Stephenville for one year. He returned to farm with his parents near Afton and later met Faye Robinson, a teacher at Patton Springs. In 1942, while stationed, in Muskogee, Oklahoma, they were married. After military service, he farmed near Afton for over thirty years. Ralph died in June of 1974 at the age of sixty-two.

Faye Bennett was born in Lubbock in 1918, but lived most of her childhood in Wichita Falls. She attended Hardin Simmons and Sul Ross. After college she taught at Afton where she met and later married Ralph Bennett. Living on their farm near Afton, she taught first grade at Patton Springs school for twenty-three years. Ralphs´s death in 1974 ended their marriage of thirty-two years. She later married Harding Wilcher, who died in 1977. Fay is now living at Possum Kingdom Lake near Graham, Texas.

James Ralph (Jimmy) Bennett is the oldest son of Ralph and Faye. He attended Patton Springs school and Texas Tech. In May of 1966, Jimmy married Sandra Sandefer of Matador. They have two children, Buffie and Bo. Farming near Afton, their family lived in Spur from 1977 to 1985. Jimmy and Sandra now live in Lewisville, Texas. He is an agent for Farm Bureau Insurance Company in Denton County. Sandra works in Dallas for Travelers Insurance Company.

Jack Grover Bennett is the second son of Ralph and Faye. He attended Patton Springs school and graduated from Texas Tech. Jack has been employed by the United Airlines for over sixteen years and has lived in Seattle, Chicago, Hawaii, and Denver.

The only daughter of Ralph and Faye is Cheryl Bennett Brummett. She attended Patton Springs school and graduated from Texas Tech. Cheryl married Craig Brummett at the Afton Baptist Church. She taught seven years at Lubbock High school. Craig is the son of Winston Brummett of Lubobck and grandson of the late Judge H.A.C. Brummett of Dickens. Cheryl and Craig live in Lubbock where he is one of six descendants of H.A.C. Brummett who are attorneys. They have three children, Stuart, Nathan, and Rebekah.

Faye WilcherGraveside services for Faye Bennett Wilcher, 86, of Lubbock will be 2 p.m. Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the Afton Cemetery in Afton under the direction of Seigler Funeral Home of Matador. Mrs. Wilcher passed away early Thursday, June 2, at the Manna Acres Care Center in Lubbock.

Faye was born Aug. 29, 1918 in Lubbock to James and Erie Hutson Robinson. She was raised in Wichita Falls, TX and graduated from Hardin-Simmons University. She was a grade school teacher for the Patton Springs School District with over 25 years of service. Faye married Ralph Bennett in 1942. They made their home in North Dickens County, where they farmed, ranched and raised their children. Ralph preceded her in death in 1974. She later married Harding Wilcher in 1975 and they made their home in Possum Kingdom Lake for 20 years. Mr. Harding preceded her in death in 1977. She had been a resident of Lubbock for the past 10 years. Mrs. Wilcher was an active member of the Midway Baptist Church near Afton and later the Graford Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and played the piano. She was preceded in death by her son, Jack, in 1984.

Survivors Include a son, Jimmy Bennett and wife Sandra of Ballinger; a daughter, Cheryl Brummett and husband Craig of Lubbock; five grandchildren, Bo Bennett, Buffi Awtry, Stuart and Nathan Brummett, and Rebekah Kerby; and five great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials to Stuart Brummett c/o Craig Brummett, 2706 82nd Street, Lubbock, TX 79423, who is doing missionary services in Uganda, Africa, and will see that the contributions go to a needy family or child.
