Ray, Nelle
Memorial services for Nelle Ray, 66, of Lamesa, will be 3 pm Sunday, January 18, 2009 at Second Baptist Church in Lamesa with Brother Rush Coffman officiating.  Family visistaion was to be held at Gonzales Funeral Home.  Mrs. Ray died on Friday, January 16, 2009, at Covenant Medical Cemter in Lubbock.  She was born on August 15, 1942.  She married Ronnie Ray on January 23, 1978 at Friendship Baptist Church.  She was a LVN and worked at Medical Arts Hopsital.  She was a retired secretay of Ray Angency.  She served as a medical consultant to Rio Grande Ministry, was a past president of the Lamesa Noon Lion's Club and wa an ombudsman for Sage Health Care.  Survivors include her husband, Ronnie of Lamesa; her mother, Alva Mae Foster of Lamesa; children, Kendal Amos and wife , Jeana, of Lamesa, Metta Tyler of Lamesa, Dan Ray and wife, Jennifer, of Lamesa and Dawn Ray of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildern and sisters, Wanda Pipkin of Lamesa and Linda Cornett and husband Loy, of Lamesa.  (Lamesa-Press Reporter, Sunday, Jan. 18, 2009) 

Roberts, Raymond Gerald 
Raymond Gerald Roberts, 81, the youngest son of Charlie and Veda Roberts, was born at Hancock in Dawson County on December 6, 1927.   Gerald died on Thursday, March 5, 2009. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Rose Ann Pelham Roberts; his parents; his brother, Harvard Roberts; a daughter-in-law, Lynda Roberts; and, a great-granddaughter, Grace Roberts.  Gerald served his country in the U.S. Army 71st Signal Service Battalion from 1945 to 1947. He served as an athletic instructor while stationed in Tokyo, Japan. He married Rose Ann Pelham on October 23, 1947. They were the first couple married in the Klondike Baptist Church. They were married for 51 years. Gerald was a farmer in the Klondike community for many years.  Gerald married Billie Estes on June 12, 1999 at Waldrop’s Well. They enjoyed retirement by traveling with their RV Club and playing cards with their dear friends. They were members of Klondike Baptist Church.   He is survived by his wife, Billie Estes Roberts. He is also survived by Lanny Roberts of Midland, Cindy Etheredge of Coppell, Bryan Roberts and wife, Teresa, of Lamesa, Tommy Estes and wife, Joy, of Lamesa, Ann Estes and husband, Sam Garcia, of San Antonio, Jack Estes and wife, Theresa, of Lamesa; 13 grandchildren, Jonna Boyle and husband, Matt, of Euless, Tausha Brock and husband, Doug, of Lamesa, Jenny Alexander of Denver, Robin Wilkie and husband, Brian, of Lamesa, Jacy Bassett and husband, Douglas, of Coppell, Kara Kirby and husband, Robert, of Lubbock, Dr. Clayton Roberts and wife, Mica, of Lamesa, Tyler Roberts and wife, Jillian, of Big Spring, Shea Thompson and husband, Trey, Lon Estes, Lacy Estes and Levi Estes, Brittany Estes Garcia; 15 great-grandchildren; and, a brother, Tommie Roberts and wife, Evelyn, of Seminole.  The family suggest memorials to the Klondike Baptist Church; Make a Wish Foundation; online to Olivia’s Hope at www.OliviasHope.org; or, a charity of your choice.  Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 2:00 p.m., at First Baptist Church in Lamesa with Brian Pinkerton officiating.  Burial followed in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.  (Lamesa Press Reporter, March 11, 2009) Visitation was held on Friday, March 6, 2009, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.        

                                                      
Rushing, James Leon
A 34 year old Lovington oil field worker plunged 95 feet to his death Monday in a rig accident near Tatum.  James Leon Rushing, 34, was employed on a Forster Drilling Co. rig 15 miles west and six miles north of Tatum at the time of the fatal mishap.  Fellow workers said that Rushing lost his balance while working in derricks in the rig's Crow's nest, slipped and fell nearly 100 feet to death.  Witnesses said the victim landed on  his back and died instantly.  An inquest was held at the office of Justice of the Peace Virginia Pior in Tatum Monday.  The death was ruled by accidental fall by a coroner's jury.  The body was transported to Smith-Yarbro Funeral Home for arrangements.  Rushing has resided in Lovington for several years.  He is survived by his wife, Annellises Rushing, 1210 W. Jackson Ave.  Other survivors are his mother, Mrs. Orbin Rushing, sister, Mrs. Eulene Pierce, both of Hobbs, and a brother, Billy Ray Rushing of Odessa.  Services will be at 3 p.m. today in Smith-Yarbro Chapel with the Rev. J. Sanders, Maxine Gillispie 
Services were scheduled for 11 am, Wednesday, October 29, 2003 at the Hillcrest Baptist Church in Carlsbad, New Mexico for Maxine Sanders, 77, of Roswell, New Mexico, who passed away October 25, 2003 at Laural View Nursing Home in Albuquerque, New Mexico.  The Rev. Ron Horn of the Presbyterian Chruch in Haines, Alaska officiated.  Maxine was born on March 29, 1926 in Lamesa, Texas to Tom and Ruby Whitlow Gillispie.  They preceded her in death.  On Feb. 20, 1947 Maxine married Eldon Sanders in Carlsbad, New Mexico.  He preceded her in death on June 19the of this year.  She is survived by one son, Tommy Sanders and his wife Syd of Albuquerque, New Mexico; one daughter, Cindy Klein and her husband Joel, of Tatum, New Mexico; her four special grandchildren, Tyson Sanders, Kyle Sanders, Rusty Klein and Lacey Klein; brother, Jackie Gillispie and his wife Marguerite, of Henryetta, Oklahoma.  Maxine lived in Carlsbad, New Mexico from 1947 until 1979.  During this time she owned and operated Cindy's clothing store.  After living in Pikeville, Kentucky and in Esterhazy, Sasketchewan, Canada, Maxine and Elton retired in Roswell, New Mexico where they lived for the past 20 years.  She was an active member of the Bethel Baptist Church and the Grace Sunday School Class.  She enjoyed bowling with her team, The Rockers.  Maxine was a vibrant and outgoing person who enjoyed people.  She wa a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend who will be greatly missed.  Pallbearers were:  Tyson Sanders, Kyle Sanders, Rusty Klein, Larry Lynch, Dale Lynch and Allan Baldridge.  Honorary pallbearers were Robert Collett, Doug Lynch, Maurbrey Riley, Jim Callaway and John Pack.  Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O.  Schmidt, John R.
John R. Schmidt, age 84, of Alvin, Texas and formerly of Plymouth, went to touch the face of God on March 30, 2004, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer.  John was born on Aug. 11, 1919, in New Holstein, a son of the late John and Wilma Wandersleben Schmidt. He attended New Holstein and Plymouth grade schools and graduated from Plymouth High School in 1937.  John served in the Army Air Corps during World War II as a flying instructor and proudly boasted that no German aircraft got past Oklahoma City. He retired as a Lt. Colonel USAF.  He married Wanda Deaton in December of 1947 and they had 52 years together before her death in December of 1999.  The couple retired to Alpine where they lived for 25 years, then after Wanda’s death, he moved to Alvin to be near his surviving family.  As a boy of 12, John first got his fascination with birds that lasted his entire life. He was a longtime member of the Texas Ornithological Society.  Survivors include two daughters, Brenda Johnson and her husband and Bennetta Schmidt; two granddaughters, Raechel Bartholomew and Laura King; two great-grandsons, Christian and Caleb Bartholomew; one brother, Carl (Dorothy) Schmidt of New Holstein; one sister, Rose Flickinger of Frost Proof, Fla.; and one sister-in-law, Betty Schmidt of Ellicott City, Md. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends. He also had one sister, Carita Fulwiler, who passed away this past week on April 16, 2004, and was preceded in death by two brothers, John and George Schmidt.  Funeral services were held at the Geeslin Funeral Home Chapel in Alvin, Texas, with Interment at the Elm Grove Cemetery.  The measure of a man is how much he is missed after he is gone, and John will be greatly missed. Scott, N.G.
N.G. Scott was laid to rest Saturday afternoon in the Lamesa Cemetery  following funeral services which were held in the Lamesa Church of Christ at 3:15, Minister J.C. Foster conducted the services.  Mr. Scott leaves a widow and three sons to mourn his passing.  Mrs. Anna Belle Scott, Lamesa; Loy Scott of Lovington, NM, Linnie Scott of Lamesa, and Aaron Scott of Big Springs.  Also his parents Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Sellers, Ernestine Teaff
Ernestine Sellers of Lubbock departed this life on Friday, January 9, 2009 at the age of 86 years. She was born September 18, 1922 in Knox City to Edward Ernest and Ollie (DuPuy) Teaff.  Ernestine gradusted from Knox City High School in 1940.  She then married Maclyn Seller on June 3, 1942 in Rule.  He preceded her in death on August 23, 1996.  Ernestine attended Tarleton College and then later graduated from Texas Tech in 1969 with a B.S. in education.  She taught as an elementary teacher unitl her retirement.  Those left to cherish her memory are her three duaghters, Cindi Heald of Lubbock, Debbie Smith and husband, Ronnie, of Lubbock and Lynn McKinney and husband, Reinahrd of Lamesa; one sister, Tomi Jame May of Rule; six grandchildren, Mandi and Scott Say, Jeff McKinney, Lyndi and Kevin Borie, Kellie Heald, Jeremy and Stephand Heald and Angie and Matt Goodwin; and seven great-grandchildren, Trevor and Shayla McKinney, Lexi Heald, Tori Streater, Mackenzie Borie and Amanda and Katie Say.   She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Burris Teaff and Jack Teaff.  Formal visitation was held from 2 to 3 pm Sunday, January 11, 2009, at White Funeral Home in Lubbock.  Celebration of Life Services were 11 am Tuesday, January 13, 2009 at Lakeridge United Methodist Church in Lubbock with Dan Boyd and John Burk officiating.  Interment followed at 2:30 pm at Lamesa Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request memorial donations to be made to the Lakridge United Methodist Church, 4701 82nd Street, Lubbock, Tx 79424.  Arrangements were under the personal care of White Funeral Home in Lubbock.  (Lamesa Press-Reporter, Sun. Shackelford, J.B. 
Former Lamesan died in Austin, J.B. Shackelford, formerly of Lamesa died at 8:00 AM Saturday in Austin,  Shackelford was a resident here from 1916 to 1938.  He is survived by his wife and one son, Earl of Lamesa, four daughters, Mrs. S.C. Richardson of Hale Center, Mrs. Herman Page and Mrs. Boyd Kilgore of California, Mrs. Harry Merriman of Alaska, and two other sons, Melvin of Los Angeles, California, and J.C. of Japan.  Obit. Shelton, John H.
Services for John Henry Shelton, 81, longtime resident of Dawson county, will be at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Primitive Baptist Church here with Elder Harold Russell officiating.  Burial will be in Lamesa Memorial Park under direction of Higginbotham Funeral Home.  Pallbearers will be J.L. Hester, P.G. Beauchamp, Bryan Jones, Crockett Brown, Carrel Lee, and Luther Brownlow.  Shelton died Friday (Jan. 10, 1964) in Medical Arts Hospital.  A resident farmer, he had lived in Dawson County since 1928.  Survivors include the wife, Lillie; four daughters, Mrs. Claude Miller, Lubbock; Mrs. Ed DuBose, Lamesa; Mrs. S. D. Davis, Alamagordo, N.M.; and Mrs. Lawrence Madden, Los Angeles, Calif.; one son, W.F. Shelton, Lamesa; one sister, Mrs. Will Anderton, Lamesa; one brother, R.N. Simpson, Adrian
Services for Adrian Simpson, 69, of Lamesa were held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. Bill Shokley, pastor and Dennis Heard of Olton officiating.  Burial will be in Hancock Cemetery under direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Simpson was dead at 12:15 p.m. Wednesday on arrival at Medical Arts Hospital from an apparent heart attack suffered at his home.  A longtime Dawson County resident, he was a retired farmer.  He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 909.  He married Josephine Houston Dec. 17,  1950 in Lamesa.  He was a member of the Northside Baptist Church.   Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Elaine Robinson of Midland and Janeice Andrus of Leveland; and one grandchild. Southard, Cora Ann
Mrs. Cora Ann Southard passed away at 11:30 p.m. Sunday, June 12 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Austin Blackmon.  Mrs. Southard was born September 23, 1876 at Boonville, Mississippi.  She was married to J.W. Southard, August 17, 1898.  She is survived by four children, Byron Southard, Lamesa, Texas; Mrs. W.R. Musick, Mayhill; Cpl. J.J. Southard, U.S. Army, El Paso, Texas; and Mrs. Austin Blackmon, Lovington.  Mrs. Southard was proceeded in death by her husband J.W. Southard December 25, 1941.  She has been a member of the Baptist Church for 70 years.  Funeral services will be held in the First Baptist Church, Lamesa, Texas, at 3:30 (CST).  (Lovington Daily Leader, June 14, 1955) Submitted by David Minton, Nov. 2006

Stephens, Ollie D.
Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Ollie D. Stephens, 79 years old, Monday in the First Baptist Church.  Rev. J.C. Quarles officiated.  After living in Lovington nine years, Mrs. Ollie D. Stephens died en route to the Lea County hospital early Saturday.  Born in Henderson County, Tennessee, Jan. 8, 1874.  Mrs. Stephens was married to Luther T. Stephens in December 1892 in Wolf City, Texas.  Mr. & Mrs. Stephens made their home in Lamesa for a while then Carlsbad, and after his death Mrs. Stephens moved to Lovington.  Mrs. Stephens is survived by two daughters of Lovington, Mrs. C.A. McDaniels and Mrs. Rome Martin; four sons, Marvin and Truett Stephens of Sulphur, Okla., and J.T. Stephens, Carlsbad; and H.V. Stephens of Pecos, Texas.  Also 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; a brother, John Weaver, Hamlin, Texas and a sister Mrs. Minnie Atkisson, Greenfield, Texas.  Pallbearers were C.L. Naull, Edd Plummer, Marion Shields, Floyd Greer, Auston Blackmon, Earl Wilks, Alton Youngblood, and W.S. Stratton, Gregory Kim 
In Memory of Gregroy K. Stratton, passed away June 7, 1963.  Funeral services June 11, 1963 at 2:00 P.M. at The Wayside Chapel of Patterson & O'Connel, San Meteo, California.  Officiating Rev. Leth Davidson, First Baptist Church.  He is buried along side his father at Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, California.  (Submitted by Louise G. Stratton, April 2007)

Stratton, Ralph Merritt
Graveside military services will be held Friday at 1 pm in Golden Gate National Cemetery, San Bruno, CA. for Ralph Merritt Stratton, 69, who died April 8 (1987) in Veterans Administration Medical Center, Denver, after a lengthy illness.  Mr. Stratton lived in San Mateo from 1955 to 1971, a period in which, as a civil engineer, he was employed at the National Park Service office in San Francisco.  He then moved to the NPS office in Denver, where he received the Department of Interior Meritorious Service Award and , at the time of his retirement in 1979 was chief of the branch of professional consultants.   A native of Garden City, Kanas, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was wounded in Belguim and received the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars.  Survivors include his wife, Louise of Lakewood, Colo; a daughter; a sister and two grandchildren.  (Submitted by Louise G. Taylor, Wayne Cullen 'Rabbit'   (photo)
Funeral services for Wayne Cullen "Rabbit" Taylor, 83, of Lamesa, were held on Tuesday,February 3, 2009, at 2:00 pm at Northside Baptist Church with Dr. Ronnie Marley and Dee Woolam officiating.  Burial followed in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Visitation was held Monday, February 2, 2009, from 5 to 7 pm at Branon Funeral Home.  Rabbit was born Dec. 26, 1925 in Key to Roy and Mary Dave Taylor.  He died on Saturday, Jamuary 31, 2009 in Dawson County.  He married Wanda Treadwell on March 5, 1951 in Lamesa.  She died on October 7, 1996.  Rabbit was fortunate enough to enjoy a second marriage to Bonnie Byrd Taylor.  They wed on November 23, 197 in Duncanville.  Rabbit served on the board for the Lamesa Coop Gin for many years.  He farmed land in Key, Midway and Andrews County.  He was also a 32nd Degree Mason.  Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Taylor of Lamesa; children, Christy Paulk of Midland and Wayne Taylor Jr., and wife Robin of Brownfield; step-children, Donna Caldwell and husband, James, of Seminole and Mark Allen Byrd and wife, Michelle, of Lovington, NM; sisters, Betty Beaird of Magnolia, AR and Latrece Murphy of Midland; grandchildren, Kyle and Bradley Paulk of Midland, Meliah Taylor of Stephenville and Wayne "Trey" Taylor III of San Angelo; step-grandchildren, Allison Dunn and husband David, of Lubbock, and Stephen Caldwell and wife Ashley of Lubbock, Micki and Matthew Byrd of Lubbock, and Mason Byrd of Lovington, NM; great-grandchildren, Kayleigh, Breeanna, and Paizlee Paulk of Midland.  He is preceded in death by his first wife, Wanda Taylor; his parents, Roy and Mary Dave Taylor; a brother, Carl Taylor; and a sister, Juanita Biggerstaff.  The family would like to suggests memorials to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children, 2222 Welborn St. Dallas, Texas 75219; the American Diabetes Association' or a charity of your choice.  (Lamesa Press-Reporter), Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2009)

Whitley, Allen Dayton
Services for Allen Dayton Whitley, 70, of Lamesa, Texas, will be at 3 pm Tuesday at Northside Baptist Church, Lamesa, Texas, with Rev. Billy Bush officiating.  Burial will be in Lamesa Memorial Park under the direction of Brannon Funeral Home.  Mr. Whitley was dead on arrival at Lea Regional Hospital after a sudden illness.  He was residing with Joe and Clara Parson, 619 West Ave I, Lovington, at the time of his death.  The Lamesa native was a WWII veteran.  He was a retired barber.  Mr. Whitley was a member of Northside Baptist Church in Lamesa.  He was preceded in death by Dezzie Ezell Howard Whitley in 1978.  Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Clara Parson, Lovington, Mrs. Beth Mills, Quanco, Virginia; four sons, J.D. Wimberley, Kate
Graveside services for Kate Wimberley, 95, of Lamesa will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Lamesa Memorial Park with the Rev. Huey Harris, pastor of Sunset Baptist Church, officiating.  Burial will be under the direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Wimberley died Tuesday (April 24 1995) at Medical Arts Hospital after a lengthy illness.  She was born April 14, 1900 in Johnson County.  She worked as a cook at the state hospital for many years.  Survivors include two sons, Ed Miller of Phoenix, Ariz., and Charlie Miller of Lamesa; a daughter, Katherine Hogans of Odessa; a stepdaughter, Jean Dyess of Lamesa; a brother, Johnny Gillispie of Tulsa, Okla.; three grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.  (Lamesa Press-Reporter), Sunday, April 23, 1995.  Submitted by Louise G. Wise, Jr., Pollard B.
Pollard B. Wise, Jr. 48 died in Lamesa, Texas, Friday night.  He was the father of Mike Wise of Lovington, station manager for Runco.  The elder Mr. Wise had not been in good health for several years since a serious ginning accident, which had resulted in the loss of a leg.  He died at his home.  Survivors, besides Mike of this city, include two other sons, Pat Wise of Carlsbad and David Wise of Las Cruces.  The funeral will be today (Sunday) at Brannon Funeral Home with burial to follow in Lamesa Memorial Park in Lamesa.   (Lovington Daily Leader, Jan. 1, 1978) Submitted by David Minton, Nov. 2006

Woodul, Dwight
Dwight Woodul, 92, of Lamesa will be at 4 p.m. today at Bryan Street Baptist Church with the Rev. Bobby Braswell, pastor, officiating. The Rev. E.R. Holder will assist.  Burial will be at Lamesa Memorial Park under direction of Branon Funeral Home.  Woodul died Friday, Oct. 18, 1996, at Medical Arts Hospital.  He was born May 23, 1904, in Hope, Ark. He married Gladys Franklin on Jan. 10, 1926, in Lamesa. He was a member of Bryan Street Baptist Church.  He was a farmer.   Survivors include his wife; a son, Arvis of Lamesa; a daughter, Joyce Neill of Lamesa; a brother, Parker of Portales, N.M.; six grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. 

Young, James L.
Funeral services were held in Lamesa Saturday afternoon at 2:30 for James L. Young of the Prairieview Community.  Mr. Young was a farmer in this area and died after an illness of only 10 days.  He was taken first to the Seminole Hospital, then to Lubbock where he expired.  Mr. Young was 30 years old, a veteran of the Second World War and served under Phil Robinson of Lovington who was his captain.  He is survived by his widow and two children four and one and one half years old.  He was a member of the Lovington REA board.  Three members of the board attended the services.  They are R.B. Yzaguirre, Doris Gallegos
Doris Gallegos Yzaguirre, 55, of Alamogordo, died Thursday, May 8, 2008, in Alamogordo. Doris was born February 17, 1953 in Ruidoso to Lucas Pepper and Julia Ann (Salas) Gallegos.  Survivors include two sons, Arthur Aguirre of Lubbock, Texas, and Phillip Yzaguirre of O'Donnell, Texas; two daughters, Stephanie Yzaguirre of Alamogordo, and Michelle Hernandez and her husband Ray of Lubbock; four grandchildren, Angelica Yzaguirre of Alamogordo, Devon and Dominic Hernandez of Lubbock, and Samuel Aguirre of La Mesa, Texas; her mother Julia Gallegos of Alamogordo; a brother David Gallegos and his wife Irma of Alamogordo; and a sister Nadine Vasquez and her husband Erminio of Las Cruces.  She was preceded in death by her father; her husband, Doroteo Yzaguirre, in 1995; and a daughter Sara Yzaguirre.  Visitation will be Tuesday, May 13, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Hamilton-O'Dell Funeral Home, with the Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by Deacon Mariano Melendrez.  Additional visitation will be Wednesday, May 14, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at St. Pius X Catholic Church in O'Donnell, Texas with the Rosary to be recited at 7:00 p.m. by the Guadalupanos.  Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at St. Pius X Catholic Church on Thursday, May 15, at 10:00 a.m. with Father Eduardo Teo as celebrant.  Interment will follow in the O'Donnell Cemetery.
