Mrs. Betty Mae Wells - Ralls educator, church and civic leader - succumbed at 8:05 a.m. Saturday, July 9, in Methodist Hospital in Lubbock. She was 75.

Memorial services were at 2 p.m. Monday in Ralls First Baptist Church with the Rev. Floyd Haddock, pastor, and the Rev. E.C. Chron, evangelist from Carrollton, officiating. Interment was made in Ralls Cemetery, under the direction of Carter Funeral Home, Ralls.

The well known Crosby County resident was born June 24, 1902 in Lamar County. She and Dewey E. Wells Sr. were married June 24, 1924 in Paris, Tex. The couple moved to Kansas City, Missouri, in 1924 and to Ralls in 1928.

Mrs. Wells taught school for 34 years, 20 years of that period in the Ralls system. She retired at age 65 from the Ralls Independent School District in 1967 and taught in the Crosbyton school system through the 1969 term before retiring.

Mrs. Wells held numerous positions during her career as an educator. She had been a member of Delta Kappa Gamma since 1951 and president of Gamma Eta Chapter from 1953-55; served on the state commission on Teacher Welfare and Morale in 1963; was the first vice president of Crosby County Unit of the State Teachers Association and a member of state and national organizations; worked with Parent-Teacher Association; served on many textbook committees; was secretary of the Third Grade Sectional Meeting of the district meeting of Texas State Teachers Association; served as president the Crosby County Unit of TSTA; was chosen as "Teacher of the Year" in Ralls Independent School District in 1961; was elected as a delegate to the state TSTA convention. In 1961-62 her third grade class won first and second place in the school science fair and won first place in the science fair at Texas Tech University.

Widely traveled, Mrs. Wells went around the world in 1967. She had visited all continents except Australia. Her slides of trips were used both for teaching material and for entertainment.

In addition to her educational activities, Mrs. Wells was an active member of First Baptist Church in Ralls. She also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and the Ralls Study Club.

Survivors are her husband, Dewey E. Wells Sr., Ralls; two sons, Dewey E. Wells Jr. and Elmer S. Wells, both of Ralls; two sisters, Mrs. Glen Hogue of Paris, Tex., and Mrs. T.C. Smith of Houston; five grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
