J.W. Payne

Services for J.W. Payne, 84, of Ralls were held at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 1999, at Ralls First Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Williams, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Lorenzo, officiating, and the Rev. Randy Bartley, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Ralls, assisting.

Burial was in the Ralls Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls. He died Friday, June 11, 1999, at the Ralls Nursing Home. He was born Aug. 30, 1914, in Liberty, TX. He married Tina Maude Sursa in 1933 at Crosbyton. She died Oct. 25, 1991.

He was a deacon and member of the Ralls First Baptist Church were he also served as Sunday School superintendent. He was on the Crosby County Fuel Cooperative, Inc., board of directors and was a past president. He also served on the ASC board of directors, the Ralls Co-op Gin board, and the Soil Conservation Board. He was a member of the Ralls Lions Club and a former trustee of the Farmer School. He lived in the Ralls area all his life and was a graduate of Ralls High School.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Taft Howard Payne, on Nov. 29, 1982.

Survivors include one son, Aubrey "Buddy" Payne of Idalou; two daughters, Peggy Aycock of Lorenzo and Rita Bodensteiner of Abilene; one sister, Ruth Shrader of Midland; 6 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. Pall bearers were Jeff Payne, Lloyd Payne, Scott Wallace, Brian Aycock, and Brad Aycock.
