photoAlice Marguerite Brown McElroy, daughter, sister, wife and always mother and grandmother walked tall into her heavenly home on March 17, 2010 in Ralls, Texas where she resided for her journey through this life on earth. Born in Lubbock, Texas on November 8, 1919, the second daughter of the late Joseph Henry and Jane Antoinette (nee Brown) Brown, Marguerite grew up in Ralls and graduated from Ralls High School in 1936. She attended Texas Technological College until she married Estral F. McElroy on January 3, 1938 and settled back in Ralls. Together they farmed and raised five children and were happily married until his death on December 18, 2004. Marguerite was predeceased by one sister, Muriel Brown Lehmann.

For her, motherhood was her calling and she never stopped mothering her own children, then her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marguerite always supported her children's activities in school, sports, scouting and church. She loved to play bridge, read, work crosswords and when asked would give her good and wise counsel. Everyone enjoyed her wit and wisdom and she lived by her motto "smile and the world smiles with you". Marguerite's gentle caretaking style brought comfort to many people in need including family members and friends alike.

As her children left home and mothering was no longer her full time passion, she directed her energy to Gifts, Etc., a boutique she co-owned with the late Billie Kimbrough on Main Street in Ralls.

Mourning her loss but thankful for her well-spent life are her children: Don McElroy and wife Ann of Muleshoe, Texas, Jonette McElroy Walker and husband Don Walker of Lubbock, Laura McElroy and husband Mike Borkland of Austin, Texas, Stan McElroy and Pam Uhr of Austin, Texas and Lee Ann McElroy of Ralls, Texas.

Her grandchildren are Stacy McElroy Johnson, Jolie Marguerite Walker, Eric McElroy, Jennifer Debs Walker, Reagan McElroy Hatch, Alison McElroy Mezger, Dustin Travis Smith, Alex McElroy and Michael Edward Borkland. Her great-grandchildren are Avery, Will and Beck Johnson, Ryder, River and Harper McElroy, Owen and Rebecca Mezger, and Kaia Hatch.

Also mourning the loss of Marguerite is her younger sister, Norma Garrett of Beaumont and her dear friend and caretaker Luisa Salazar of Ralls.

Marguerite was a 70-year member of the Ralls First United Methodist Church where a memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 19, 2010.

The family suggests memorials to the Ralls Library, 813 Main Avenue, Ralls, TX 79357, Ralls First United Methodist Church, 517 Watts Avenue, Ralls, TX 79357 or to the charity of one's choice.
