Peyton Legg

Peyton Law Legg of Ralls, a longtime educator and businessman, was claimed by death about 9:30 a.m. Sunday in Crosbyton Clinic Hospital. Mr. Legg had suffered a prolonged illness.

He was 73.

Memorial services were conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday in the First Baptist Church of Ralls. Officiating were Dr. Billy Burke, pastor; Rev. Larry Stalling, a Baptist minister from Fort Worth; and Elder L. M. Handley, a Primitive Baptist elder from Cross Plains.

Interment was made in Ralls Cemetery, following Masonic graveside services. Carter-Adams Funeral Home of Ralls was in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers were George Wilson, Walter Graves, Doyle Norris, Darwin Sesson, George Pierot, Clyde Crump, Dwayne Moses and Glenn Joyce. Deacons of First Baptist Church in Ralls were honorary pallbearers.

Born May 18, 1907 in Dickens County, he married Edith Belle Hicks on Aug. 26, 1934 at Kalgary. Mrs. Legg died Oct. 23, 1967.

Mr. Legg and Maude Schluter were married Feb. 26, 1968 in Ralls.

A member of First Baptist Church in Ralls, Mr. Legg served as an ordained deacon. He was a Master Mason (Spur Lodge), had served as a state director of the Selective Service Board and as a school trustee.

Legg attended Wayland Baptist College and was graduated from Texas Tech University. He had been a principal and teacher at the following schools: Prairie Chapel, Lakeview, Farmer, Patton Springs, Estelline, Ralls and Afton.

Owner of a food store in Afton for 20 years, he worked at Danner's Department Store in Ralls until ill health forced his retirement in 1979.

Survivors include his wife, Maude; two sons, Troy Max Legg of Garland and Charles Eugene Legg of Dumas; three step-daughters, Whynona Easter of Denver City, Joyce Rhyne of Fredericksburg, Va., and Dianne Ivie of Seminole; one brother, J.P. Legg of Lubbock; eight grandchildren; and six step-grandchildren.

One son, James Peyton Legg, preceded his father in death in 1971.
