James Leftwich

Services for James Edward Leftwich, 88, of Ralls will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, December 19, 2006 at the Ralls First Baptist Church with Rev. Floyd Haddock, Rev. Larry Carson and Robert Danner officiating. Burial will follow in the Ralls Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls. James passed away Monday, December 18, 2006 at his home with his loving family by his side. James was born March 5, 1918 in Magazine, Arkansas to the late V. T. and Lela Maude (Lair)Leftwich.

He was a graduate of Lubbock High School and Texas Tech University. He then was drafted into the Army and served as an officer in the South Pacific during WWII.

On Feb. 11, 1969 he married Lela Malone Haberer in Snyder, Texas.

He was a member of the Ralls First Baptist Church and a past member of the Jaycees, Lions Club and Rotary Club.

He moved from Lubbock to Ralls in 1951 and owned and operated Leftwich Super Foods and then Thriftway Super Market for many years. He was an original member and director of the South Plains Wholesale Grocery Company and Thriftway Super Markets and was employer of the year in 1983 and 1984.

He served on the Ralls City Council for seven years and served as Mayor of Ralls for four years. He liked to play golf and was a past member of the Floydada Country Club, the Lorenzo Country Club and the White River Golf Club.

James is preceded in death by 3 brothers, Eugene, Meriam and Jack Leftwich. He is survived by his wife; Lela Leftwich of Ralls, his two daughters and their husbands; Sophia and David Lightner of Lubbock and Stephanie and Matt Boyd of Liberty, Texas.

Also surviving are three sisters-in-law; Syble Leftwich of Lubbock, Lawanda Leftwich of Lubbock and Georgia Leftwich of Longmont, Colorado, Lucille Coker of Ralls and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials to a charity of choice.
