Biography

Chester Henry was born in Plainview, NM April 2, 1909. He came to Dickens Co. with his parents Fred and Eula Henry. Somewhere around 1916 he attended school at Duncan Flat, where he met Annie Greenwood. She came to Dickens Co. in 1919. We both attended school at Duncan Flat. We attended church in the Duncan Flat school house, we had Sunday night singing at different homes, we all enjoyed this. We walked to school, we all worked on the farm. Annie´s parents were Mr. and Mrs. J.B. Greenwood.

Chester and Annie were married in 1928 in Spur, Texas. They have two boys Freddy Henry of Lubbock and Lee Henry of Temple, Texas. We have 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. We farmed in Dickens Co. until 1937 then we moved to Crosby Co., where we farmed until Chester´s health began to fail. We moved to Ralls where Chester died April 8, 1977. Annie lived alone in Ralls until April 14, 1895, she then married Claude Adams.

Chester and Annie Henry moved from Dickens Co. in 1937 to the Dobkins farm in Estacado community. Chester was a member of Duncan Flat Baptist Church. He served on A.S.C. committee two years and on F.H.A. committee one term in Crosby Co. He was a member of Emma Lodge #931 for 30 years.

Due to failing health, they sold their farm to Jimmy Boydstun in 1977 and moved to Ralls Feb. 4, 1977. Chester had open heart surgery in July 1976 which was a success, but developed a malignancy and passed away Apr. 8, 1977 in Lubbock Methodist Hospital.

Services for Chester L. Henry, 68, of Ralls were at 2 p.m. Monday in the First Baptist Church here, with the Rev. Floyd Haddock, pastor, and the Rev. Dick Richards, pastor of the United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial was in Ralls Cemetery under direction of Carter Funeral Home.

Henry died about 8:30 a.m. Friday in Lubbock´s Methodist Hospital after a lengthy illness.

A native of Plainview, NM, he moved to Crosby County in 1937 from Dickens County. He married Annie Greenwood June 23, 1928, in Spur. He was a retired farmer.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Fred J. of Lubbock and Lee of Wheeler; two brothers, J.D. of Lorenzo and Herman of Shallowater; nine grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Services for Annie Henry Adams, 86, of Ralls were held at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ralls First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ron Colwell, pastor, officiating.

 Burial followed in the Ralls Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.

 Mrs. Adams died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at her son´s residence in Temple. She was born July 10, 1911, in Midland, TX, and married Chester L. Henry on June 23, 1928, in Spur, Tx. He preceded her in death on April 8, 1977. She then married Claude Adams on April 14, 1985, in Ralls. He preceded her in death on Oct. 18, 1997. She was a homemaker and a member of Ralls First United Methodist Church. She was a mother adviser to the Rainbow Girls from 1950 to 1951, and the president of the Ralls Band Boosters from 1959 to 1960. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 169, where she served as worthy matron from 1954 to 1955. She was named Ralls Woman of the Year in 1980, and she was the Ralls Senior Citizen of the Year in 1983. She moved to Estacado in 1937, then to Farmer in 1941, then to Ralls 1977. She farmed with her late husband Chester until his death in 1977.

She is preceded in death by a sister, Juanita Middleton who died March 18, 1997.

Survivors include two sons, Fred J. of Temple and Lee D. of Abilene; three stepdaughters, Frances Adams of Los Angeles, Calif., Claudia Anderson of El Paso and Patricia Scales of Lubbock; a brother, James Berry Greenwood Jr. of Hereford; seven grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
