During J.W.´s nine years as superintendent at Robertson, he became interested in new farming techniques --tractors and new varieties of grain sorghum instead of mule-drawn plows and hooked neck maize. In 1937 he bought a half section of land west of Ralls for $30 per acre and two years later drilled his first irrigation well, hoping that the farm would eventually pay for itself while he made a living teaching school.
In 1950 J. W. Adams married Ruth W. MARKS, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R. Marshall WHEELER of Robertson community.
In 1952 J.W. and Ruth, both Texas Tech graduates, received Master´s degrees from West Texas State University while teaching at Tulia Public Schools. He was elementary principal and she taught high school English and journalism.
Ruth´s special love for English motivated their summer travels. While learning more about different areas of the country, they took English courses at the University of Colorado, Boston University, Brigham Young University, and Imperial College of London University while seeing literary England and Scotland. After these experiences J. W. also became an English teacher, and they spent the last ten years of their careers teaching English at the Floydada and Ralls schools.
In 1966 J. W.´s new career began when he took over the management of their farm on which they now live. At Ralls they are members of First Methodist Church, Ruth serves on Ralls Historical Museum Board, Crosby County Historical Commission, and has worked with Ralls Study Club. J. W. is an active Rotarian and serves his club in various capacities.
