Biography

Roy Abell´s father, Zadok was born in Morganfield, KY., in 1857. He later moved to Texas where he married Mary Elizabeth SHARP. They lived in Gordon, Palo Pinto Co., where they raised several children. Zadok was engaged in cattle, farming, and ginning until his death in 1895.

Roy married Nena SCOTT, who was also from Gordon, in 1917. Nena´s parents were George F. and Katie Ham SCOTT. Roy worked as a roughneck in the Mineral Wells oil fields until he moved his wife and two sons, Roy Jr. and Earl C. to Lorenzo in 1921. While living in Lorenzo they had two more sons, Lyman and Billy Wayne. Roy operated a service station on Lorenzo´s main street near the train depot.

Sometime later a car salesman persuaded Roy to order one car from him for $50 down. when he received the car and sold it, he ordered another one. This was how he became a Chevrolet salesman.

In 1936 the ABELL family moved to Ralls where they owned and operated Abell Chevrolet until Roy Sr´s. death in 1960.

Roy Jr. married Billy Mary GLEATON June 21, 1939, in Ralls. She is the daughter of W. W. and Stella GLEATON. Roy and Billy Mary have two sons, Danny and Davey. Danny married the former Amelia PARKS in 1963 and they have two children, Doyle David and Angie. Davey married Ann DAVIS and they also have two children, Amanda and Dee.

Earl C. married Neva CYPERT in July, 1944. Neva is the daughter of the late Benton Homer CYPERT and Florilla Morrow CYPERT. Earl C. and Neva have two daughters, Pam and Dixie. Pam married Thomas S. TAYLOR and Dixie married Ken WELCH.

Lyman married Vee COLLINS in 1942, she was the daughter of Clarence and Thelma COLLINS. Lyman and Vee had three sons before her death in 1958. Lyman Jr. (Ricky) married Bonnie BARNETT and they have two daughters, Jennifer and Meegan. Ronnie married Margaret CROWLEY and they had one daughter, Shannie Daniele. Lyman was in the dairy business in Purdy, MO. before moving his family to Ralls. In 1960 Lyman married Betty Jane BEDINGFIELD, the daughter of Paul and Layton Hinson BEDINGFIELD. They have two sons, Paul and Todd.

Billy Wayne married Charlotte HILL in 1955, she is the daughter of E.B. and Baby Charles HILL. While living in Lubbock they had three children, Bill, Robert, and Ann. Bill moved his family to Wichita Falls and was a Shell Oil distributor until his death in 1972.

The three oldest Abell boys were in the armed forces during World War II and Bill was in the navy during the Korean War.

Nena was known for her bridge playing abilities. She died in March, 1972.

Obituary

Services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday in Ralls First United Methodist Church for Mrs. Roy Abell Sr., 80, of Ralls who died about 4 a.m. Saturday in a hospitality home in Lubbock.

The Rev. Vernon O´Kelly, pastor, assisted by Rev. H.F. Scott, minister of Bacon Heights Baptist Church of Lubbock, officiated. Burial was in Ralls Cemetery under the direction of Carter Funeral Home of Ralls.

A native of Gordon, Mrs. Abell moved to Crosby County in 1921 from Mineral Wells. She was a member of the Idalou Eastern Star.

Survivors include four sons, Roy R. Jr., Earl C. and Lyman, all of Ralls, and Bill W. of Wichita Falls; a brother, Earl Scott of Midland; and a sister, Mrs. Etta Wartes of Lubbock; 12 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

Grandsons served pallbearers.
