Civil War VeteranHistorical Marker DedicationDescendants, their families and guests gathered at the Estacado Cemetery last Saturday, September 20, for the dedication of a commemorative historical marker at the grave of Civil War veteran Austin (Bud) Fox.Marcia Lockwood of Lorenzo, president of the Crosby County Historical Commission, was among those on hand for the occasion.
The dedication was conducted by members of the Permian Basin Chapter #2589 of the Daughter of the Confederacy in Odessa, which arranged for the government to provide the historical marker.
Carol Steakley, president of the Permian Basin chapter and Chapter Member Phyllis Janke opened the ceremony, which was highlighted by an historical perspective given by Angie Merchant Clark also of Odessa, great-granddaughter of Fox.
Fox' two living grandsons, Charley (Dip) of Lorenzo and Laird H. (Doc) Fox of Ransom Canyon, were introduced, and his great-great-granddaughter, Julie Howard Gray placed a wreath on the grave.
In her historical perspective, Ms. Clark recalled that her great-grandfather was born Oct. 23, 1841, in Montgomery County in East Texas, the son of John Fox of North Carolina, who came to Texas in 1837 where he received a land grant of 640 acres.
During the Civil War, Fox served in Company K, 5th Texas Calvary, 2nd Regiment, Sibley's Brigade, rising from private to corporal during this service from 1861 to 1865.
He had two children by his first wife, who died shortly after the birth of a daughter in October of 1867. In 1870 Fox married Sarah Watson and they had three children.
Austin Fox and his family came to Estacado, Crosby County, Texas, in 1887. Sarah died June 9, 1900. Austin died May 1, 1928, and is buried beside Sarah in the Estacado Cemetery.
In addition to his two living grandsons, Austin Fox is survived by many great, great-great, and great-great-great grandchildren.
