Obituary

Mass for Zaragoza "Joe" Hernandez, 66, a resident of Lorenzo for 19 years, was held at 2:00 p.m. Friday in the San Lorenzo Catholic Church in Lorenzo with Reverend Aidan Maguire, pastor, officiating. Rosary was held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the same church and also under the direction of the Reverend Maguire. Burial followed Mass in the Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Carter Adams Funeral Home of Ralls.

Mr. Hernandez died at 7:50 a.m. Wednesday in Lubbock´s Methodist Hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born April 19, 1921 in San Ygnacio, Texas and married Clara Guzman December 25, 1946 in Zapata, Texas. He was a mechanic and a member of the San Lorenzo Catholic Church. He moved to Lorenzo in April of 1968 from Brownfield.

Survivors include his wife of the home, 2 sons, Juan Hernandez of Petersburg, Joe Hernandez of Idalou; 4 daughters, Josie Guzman of Lorenzo, Mary DeLeon of Lubbock, Diana Puente of Lorenzo and Sylvia Arguello of Idalou; 1 brother, Manuel Hernandez of Hobbs, NM; 2 sisters, Isidra Cabanas and Magdelena Lopez, both of Hobbs, New Mexico and 21 grandchildren.

Rosary for Clara Guzman Hernandez, 76, of Lorenzo was at 7 p.m. Sunday, September 21, 2008 at San Lorenzo Catholic Church in Lorenzo. Mass was celebrated 2 p.m. Monday, September 22, 2008 at the same church with Rev. Roland Buxkemper officiating. Burial was in the Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Lorenzo.

Clara passed away on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at her home in Lorenzo.

She was born May 20, 1932 in Zapata to Jose and Margarita Villarreal Guzman. She married Joe Zaragoza Hernandez on December 25, 1946 in Zapata. He preceded her in death in on October 7, 1987. She was a member of San Lorenzo Catholic Church and the Guadalupanas. Clara was a homemaker and moved to Lorenzo in 1968 from Brownfield.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Juan and Gloria Hernandez of Petersburg; Joe and Beatrice Hernandez of Idalou; four daughters and their husbands, Josie and Terso Guzman of Lorenzo; Sylvia and Fred Arguello of Lubbock; Diana and Daniel Puente of Lorenzo; and Maria and Paul DeLeon of Lubbock; three brothers, Jose Guzman of California, Hereberto Guzman of Beaumont, Pablo Guzman of Lubbock; a sister, Maria Luz Nava of Petersburg; 21 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were: Raymond Hernandez, James DeLeon, Gabriel Puente, Alfred Arguello, David Guzman and Chris Arguello.
