Services for Herschel Bird, 79, of Lorenzo were held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Lorenzo First Baptist Church with the Rev. Glynn McCalman officiating. Burial followed in the Lorenzo Cemetery under direction of Adams Funeral Home of Lorenzo.

Herschel passed away Monday, April 3, 2006 at the Ralls Nursing Home.

He was born March 8, 1927 in Bradley, Arkansas to the late John and Gertrude (McCalman) Bird. On July 3, 1956 he married Miriam Waldorf in Lubbock, Texas. He worked as a farmer for 18 years, car salesman for 10 years, and served as Crosby County Commissioner for 16 years retiring in 1996.

Herschel enjoyed playing dominoes and golf with all his friends. His favorite time was spent going on the many camping trips around the country with his grandchildren and his favorite dog Missy. He especially enjoyed going to all the sporting events in which his grandchildren were participating.

He was a member of the Lorenzo First Baptist Church, a past member of the Lorenzo Housing Authority, past president of the Lorenzo Lions Club, officer of the Lorenzo JayCees, former president of the board of Pleasant Hill Gin. He served on the Regional Solid Waste Advisory Committee, South Plains Association of Governments, and was a member of County Officials Political Action and former member of the West Texas and State Judges and Commissioners Associations. Herschel was a US Army veteran of WWII.

He is preceded in death by six brothers and four sisters.

Survivors include; his wife; Miriam of Lorenzo, a son and his wife; Kevin and Lisa Bird of Poquoson, VA, a daughter, Eunice Bird of Lorenzo, five grandchildren; Tiffany Bird, Steffany and husband Toby Wildbrett, Lance and wife Leslie Stark, Heath Stark and Nicole Bird and close friends; Jim and Jackie Norris of Lorenzo, Walt and Reba Norris of Lorenzo, and Pat and Joan Yoakum of Cone, and one great grandson.

Serving as pallbearers were; Gerald Beshirs, Walt Norris, Jim Norris, K. Don Spurgin, Coy Biggs and Dee Reynolds. Honorary bearers will be Walter Brown, Ray Parker, Jerry Swetnam and Dick Van Hoose, Lance Stark and Heath Stark and Kevin Rainwater

The family suggests memorials to Alzheimers Research, 3601 4th St. STOP 8321, Lubbock, Texas 79430 or Haven Animal Care Shelter, 4501 N. FM 1729-CR 3000, Lubbock, Texas 79401.

Miriam Eunice (Waldorf) Bird, 76, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family at 11:20 a.m. at the Baylor-Grapevine Hospital in Grapevine, TX, on Friday, September 16, 2011. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, September 20, 2011 at Lorenzo Cemetery. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at First Baptist Church in Lorenzo with Dr. Fred Meeks officiating, under the care of Adams Funeral Home Lorenzo.

She was born in Chicago, Ill. on January 4, 1935, to Stanley and Freida Waldorf. She moved to Lubbock in 1955, married Herschel Bird in July 1956 and then moved to Lorenzo in 1959. Herschel preceded her in death in April 2006.

She is survived by her children, Eunice Bird, 52, of Lorenzo and Kevin Bird, 51, and daughter-in-law, Lisa Bird of Poquoson, Va.; her sister, Arlene and brother-in-law, Ted Dahlfors of Keller, Texas; and her brother, Guy Waldorf, 72, of Littlefield, Ariz. She also has five grandchildren, Tiffany Rodriguez and her husband, Jeremy of The Colony, Texas, Steffany Wildbrett and her husband, Toby of Flower Mound, Texas, Lance Stark and his wife, Leslie of Idalou, Heath Stark of Lubbock, Texas, and Nicole Snow and her husband, Jeff of Poquoson, Va., and three great-grandchildren, Houston and Natalie Stark and Brady Lee Snow.

Miriam retired after 30 years as the Elementary Principal's Secretary with the Lorenzo ISD and was member of the First Baptist Church of Lorenzo since 1962.

She was a former Sunday School teacher, leader for the Cub Scouts, Brownie Scouts, and Girl Scouts. In addition, she enjoyed traveling and camping with grandchildren and her favorite dog, Missy, watching sporting events involving grandchildren and enjoyed doing ceramics, crocheting, making stain glass and working in the yard.

In lieu of flowers, Miriam requested considering contribution to The Haven Animal Care Shelter, 4501 N. FM 1729, Lubbock, TX 79403 or Alzheimer's Research, 3601 4th St - Stop 8321, Lubbock, TX 79430.
