Obituary

Funeral rites for Cecil Simpson, 69, were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the First Baptist Church. Rev. Carlton Thomson officiated, assisted by Rev. Otis Testerman.

The widely known South Plains cowboy and ranch foreman died at 11:50 p.m. Friday in a Lubbock hospital. He had been in ill health for some time.

Simpson was born at Vernon, October 19, 1892, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Simpson. When he was 15, the family moved to Motley county where he attended school and worked for his farmer stockman father. At a very early age, young Cecil began breaking horses for ranches around Matador.

In 1913, the Simpson family first moved to Crosby county where Simpson worked or the Bar N Bar, Z Bar L, Half Circle S and later for Sidney Webb on the Bar X Ranch.

In 1924 he moved to Vernon and assumed guardianship of the Farley heirs together with management of the Farley estate. He worked for the famous Waggoner Ranch while there and was assistant to Bob Moore. Later he took a position as field superintendent for a drilling company at Wichita Falls.

Simpson moved back to Crosbyton in 1942 and was employed by the J.S. Bridwell ranches living at the Crawfish headquarters. He worked for W.W. Brunson of the L-7 Ranches at Crosbyton, West Texas and New Mexico. While with Brunson he was engaged in importing cattle, 7,000 in 1952 alone.

He went to work for Stanton Brunson here in 1954 and continued until retiring, August 22, 1961.

Simpson married Mary E. Moore, December 19, 1917.

"Cecil was always at home on his horse and riding the pasture looking after the cattle," says Mrs. Simpson. "His great joy was talking to others about his many experiences on ranches."
