He was elected Sheriff of Crosby County, Texas and was the youngest sheriff for many years. He was appointed Deputy U.S. Marshell and U.S. Probation for the Northern District of Texas. He retired as Chief U.S. Probation Officer for the Northern District of Texas in 1963.

Obituary

CROSBYTON (Special) - Graveside services for Elmer J. Reed, 92, of Lubbock will be at 11 a.m. Friday in Crosbyton Cemetery with the Rev. John Ballard, associate pastor of First Baptist Church, officiating.

Burial will be under direction of Sanders Funeral Home.

Reed died Tuesday, Feb. 14, 1995, in Methodist Hospital.

He was born Nov. 23, 1902, in Wise County. He moved to Crosby County in 1917, and he attended Crosbyton High School and Draughon´s Business College in Abilene. He married Julia Mae Carter on June 14, 1924, in Crosbyton. She died Oct. 28, 1982. He moved to Lubbock in 1934.

He served as deputy sheriff of Crosby County, and he was elected sheriff of Crosby County in November 1926, serving from January 1927 to December 1932. He was the youngest sheriff in Texas for many years and one of the youngest sheriffs in the United States. He was appointed deputy U.S. Marshall in August 1935, and he was appointed to the U.S. Probation Office. He became the chief U.S. probation officer in May 1953 for the 101 county region of the Northern District of Texas until retiring in 1963.

Survivors include a son, Elmer J. Reed Jr. of Lubbock; a daughter, Julia Beth Johnston of Crosbyton; six grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
