SPUR Services for John Elliott Quattlebaum, 78, of Spur were held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, March 9, 2002 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Larry Burton officiating. Burial was in Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Campbell Funeral Home of Spur.
He died Thursday, March 7, 2002 in Lubbock.
Mr. Quattlebaum was born Aug. 7, 1923, in Gray County, Texas to John and Anna Butterfield Quattlebaum. He graduated from Dalhart High School in 1943 and Texas A&M in 1947.
He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II and missed D-Day, because they did not call out his name to board the plane for overseas. He married Willie Pritchard Richey on Aug. 6, 1954 in Dickens County. He retired from Farmers Home Administration in 1981. He then worked for First National Bank in Tulia for seven years as agriculture officer before moving back to Dickens County to farm. He was a member of the Methodist church.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Doris Landry.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Brenda Stanaland of Girard; son, Wayne Richey of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sisters, Evelyn Crawford of Alvin, Marian Davis of San Angelo, and Anna Gene Harvel of Alvin, one brother, William "Bill" Quattlebaum of Mesquite; four grandchildren, Joe Brent Stanaland, Joy Holcomb, Reagen Richey and Sierra Richey; and one great-granddaughter, Sarah Stanaland.
