Obituary
Funeral Services for Jack Duane Parker, 72, of Lubbock were held at the Parkway Drive Church of Christ in Lubbock at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 28, 1998. Officiating was Charlie Thomas, minister of Parkway Drive Church of Christ, and David Fultz, retired, minister of the Church of Christ.
Interment was in the Crosbyton Cemetery under the direction of Adams Funeral Home of Crosbyton.
Parker died Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in Methodist Hospital in Lubbock following a long battle against cancer.
He was born May 20, 1926, in the Big Four Community to Crosby County pioneers Johney L. and Lettie Fowler Parker.
Parker married La Vada Mae Smith on Sept. 5, 1949 in Wichita, KS.
They were original houseparents of Cottage Two at the Children´s Home of Lubbock, leaving there shortly before their first child was born. Mrs. Parker died Oct. 22, 1987. He married Velma Howell Sept. 24, 1988 in Idalou.
He was a graduate of Crosbyton High School, Abilene Christian University and Iowa State University. He taught school for several years prior to entering the insurance business. He received his Chartered Life Underwriter designation and was a member of the America Founders Life Insurance Roundtable. He also was a real estate broker.
Parker was a member of the Church of Christ. He served 40 years as a deacon at Parkway Drive Church of Christ in Lubbock, where he also served as Education Director and tutored neighborhood children in math and reading on many Saturdays.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Velma of Lubbock; a son, Duane Parker and his wife, Gayla, of Tyler; two daughters, Jan Crosslin and her husband, Richard, of Garland, and Liesl Waldrum and her husband, Bill, of Paso Robles, CA; a stepdaughter, Debbie Wood and her husband, Chad, of Bullard; 11 grandchildren (named in original); three brothers, Larry Willis Parker of Granbury, Don Lowell Parker of Crosbyton and Dayton E. Parker of Tahoka.
