John F. Fletcher, who moved his family to Crosby County in 1942, was claimed by death Friday morning in Crosbyton Care Center following a prolonged illness. He was 79.Memorial services for Mr. Fletcher were at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Church of Christ here with Jim York, minister, Josephy Johnston and Carrol Robertson officiating.
Interment was made in Crosbyton Cemetery. Adams Funeral Home directed arrangements.
Pallbearers were Don Parker, Foy Owens, Dee Cash, D.J. Moses, C.D. cash and Clyde Ellison.
Mr. Fletcher was active in the Church of Christ and in the Crosbyton Senior Citizens.
He was born in October 1904 in Henderson. His parents moved to Texas from Tennessee, settling near Wharton to help construct railroads. After moving to Colorado, they returned to Texas in 1924.
In Donley County, John F. Fletcher met Elna Davis and the couple was married there in June 1929. They started farming but were forced by the depression to do "daily work". Mrs. Fletcher´s brother, Orville Davis, had purchased a section of land in Wake community but was drafted into the Army during World War II and gave his sister and brother-in-law the opportunity to farm the land. the Fletchers and their seven children moved to the farm in February 1942.
The Fletchers later purchased land at Wake and later at Mt. Blanco community. They sold the Mt. Blanco farm to Vernon Wheeless and retired to a small farm near Levelland.
The couple returned to Crosbyton in 1965, purchasing a home at 603 South Berkshire.
All seven of the Fletcher offspring were graduated from Crosbyton High School. Three of the sons served in the military.
Surviving Mr. Fletcher are his wife; four sons, Bill Fletcher of Seattle, Wash., Dick Fletcher of Goodland, Kan., Ben Fletcher of Austin and Weldon Fletcher of Snyder; three daughters, Verna Green of San Angelo, Audene Abraham of Victoria and Edna Norman of Mineral Wells; two brothers, Clyde Fletcher of San Pablo, Calif., and Eugene Fletcher of Turlock, Calif., two sisters, Jennie Durrett of Citrus Heights, Calif., and Mattie Turner of Winterhaven, Calif.; 20 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
